J'aime bien l'effet. |

This is a lens that would difficult to carry on your motorcycle! (12 lbs for the lens alone...) |

Very nice. I agree with previous comments. My only suggestion would be to get a much lower angle on the bird. Did you consider laying on the ground? |

I have seen many beautiful pictures from this location but I have to say that this probably the best one! Great focus at f/4 due to the 17mm wide angle lens. I would have been inclined to use a higher f stop but can't argue with the results.
Just wonderful! |

It is very difficult to keep everything in focus while having so many layers that are far apart. You did not mention your f stop nor your focal distance. This would be very interesting. To try to maximize the focal range I would have use a very high f stop and target the focus at the junction between the grass and the trees. I also agree with the other comments above.
Focus stacking can also be tried but would not work due to movements.
Did you take pictures focussing on the birds alone?

Great job! I need to learn much more about post processing. Great capture with perfect focus - nice cropping. Just wonderful. |

Just beautiful and ominous. Great B/W conversion.
Motorcycling in Alaska... What equipment are you carrying with you?
I remember taking to a motorcyclist in Carcross (Yukon) that had a very little dog riding with him in his leather coat or in a special cup holder on his handlebar (if the weather was nice). This dog was wearing special goggles and loved riding!

Just wonderful "un-cropping" job. This is inspiring me to relook at some of my pictures that I tossed due to very close edges. Great capture, light and perfect focus.
As I work with children, this is one of the most important birds! Old storytellers reported that these storks were flying with human newborns and bring them to our houses at night! I do encourage young couples to keep the baby room window open! |

Thanks for all your very nice comments. I replied to Brenda's comments due to the questions.
I was at Algonquin Park (Ontario) the first full weekend of January 2017 with a very small group of photographers (4 in all including our local guide). We were in a small parking lot on the east end of the park when this wild fox (obviously used to very quiet human presence!) came in and around the lot. This fox was looking for food in the fresh snow from the previous night and stayed around us for a bit. To get this low shot (and several other nice ones), I had to lay flat on the snow with the 600mm lens (not that easy to do especially when I needed to change direction ... but fun exercise!). The cropping on this picture is minimal. |

Hi Ed,
Thanks for the nice comments. I use RAW filed with neutral setting. This gives me somewhat "flat" pictures. With landscapes and nature, I try to obtain a final product that is as close as I can to the "real thing". I will adjust the W/B, maybe increase the clarity, luminosity, minor touch up with dehaze if needed but I barely touch the saturation. This was a gorgeous sunset.
As you can see, there was no clouds. I did not find interesting to watch the sun going down in the ocean (one need clouds to bring all the colors in the sky). I turned approx. 90 degree to the south and took this picture.
p.s.: I also like to take pictures inside of old buildings - especially with big machines (pumps, grain elevators, etc...) In that situation, I like to increase saturation and add some grunge to give a more surrealistic effect. |

These are powerful waves. There is a mirror effect on the bottom of the picture as well as on the right and left sides! How did you processed it?
Personally, I find these mirrors distracting and prefer without them (see attached).
Beautiful capture! Very energetic! |

Several of your questions are a matter of taste and are related more to what you felt. One could decide to increase the saturation even if this would not be representative of the natural colors at the time. I personally prefer to be as close as the "real thing" but appreciate when the reality is somewhat modified.
Your other concern is linked to the calibration of your computer screen, and eventually to your printer set-up. It is very important to calibrate your computer screen on a regular basis (every 2 weeks or so) and to avoid direct light on the screen. Several calibration tools exist. I personally use Spyder 5 - the change in tone and brightness can be surprising at time. If your screen is not properly calibrated you will notice that your prints will not color match your screen.
In respect to the cropping, I think that I would have left a bit more on the bottom. I would also suggest to reduce the shadow with the graduated neutral density filter increasing the light on the bottom of the picture. |

Just beautiful. Very nice description on how you solve your problems. Where to stand? What do you want in your frame? Before I leave this site, is there anything else that I should try?
I need to think of using this effect once in a while.
I sensed the presence of Ansel Adams in your photographic mindset? A very thoughtful master of photography.

Wonderful high key picture. Despite the time of the day, the shadows are well controlled and not interfering with the lines. Beautiful. |

Wonderful - as you always do! It would have been nice to have a little separation between the top of this tree and the dark cloud just above it but this is not something that we can control!
I really like the mood, colors, lines, clouds and details everywhere. Beautiful. |
