Okay, I personally prefer to see the beautiful colors of the fireworks, but that's just me. At the same time, I also say that you achieved the goal of what you wanted to do, which was to experiment with a different look. That you did just perfectly. It's always good now and then to step out of our boxes and try something new. |

What a nice shot, Joe! Love the way the butterflies create the V pattern. I also like the way you softened and darkened the background. This really enhances the color and focal point of the butterflies.

Jerry pretty much sums up everything. I've been to Craters of the Moon once and it's a fascinating place. I did find it hard to get a composition I liked. The one you captured is perfect. I love the way the branch curves around the distant cone and gives it a nice frame. The tree provides an anchor and the limb draws the eye to the peak. |

When I see it posted now, I totally agree with what you are saying. It looked better when I started working on it than it does now. Appreciate your comments. |

The hikers definitely add scale to this image. I agree with Virginia, though, that they appear so tiny that I wouldn't have noticed them if I hadn't read Marla's or Virginia's comments. I agree with Virginia about cropping to bring more attention to them but I'd go a step further and crop more off the top. Either of the enormous trees give it sufficient enough scale that you don't need to include as much height. |

I like the way you composed this image, with the muddy road leading the eye to the clouds and blue sky in the background. I tend to agree with Marla, however, that it lacks a strong focal point. Sometimes when I'm faced with a composition like this I might look around for different angles -- such as getting low and perhaps focusing more on the cloud reflected in the large pool in the foreground, tiny ripples in the water in the ruts or even a close-up of interesting patterns in the mud or gravel. Just thought to play with when you're in a position like this. |

You captured this scene perfectly. I especially like the way the canyon leads to the waterfall. How sharp or smooth to make the water really depends on your personal preference. I've seen freeze-action waterfalls that I like and I've seen silky smooth waterfalls that I like. Per your note, try different shutter speeds and find the version you like best. |

Marla did exactly what I would have suggested -- remove the intrusive stick. Her cleaned up version makes this a perfect image. |

I think you definitely achieved your goal of depicting a "hot sunset." It sure looks hot to me. Love the colors and the reflection on the water. The sun is also perfectly placed off-center. Nice job. |

This is certainly a beautiful countryside. I can imagine being taken when you come upon a sight such as this, camera in hand. I think you've got a perfectly sharp image and nice exposure. From a composition standpoint, I believe you are trying to capture too much. There is nothing to arrest my eye, just a lot of empty space. When I look at this, I see a gorgeous display of lights and shadows on the left third of the photo, between the tree line and telephone/power lines. I think if you zoomed in on that portion of the image, you'd have a fabulous takeaway that captured the lights and shadows image you set out to obtain. |
