One of the frequent judges in my competition club was nicknamed The Border Patrol because he always lowered his score if there was one or more light areas at the edge; he said they cause the viewer's eye to be drawn out of the image, which he considered a very bad thing. I hadn't really remembered that when I looked at your image, but I did notice that those bricks, even though they aren't as bright as other objects in the image, are brighter than the red bricks that form such a nice backdrop to your interesting subjects. I can't explain why my eye is drawn up and out of your image, I was simply making the observation that as one humble viewer, it was my experience. |

The moodiness you've managed to pull out of the image is wonderful Denise. I love the addition of the buildings in the sky. The guy with the umbrella was a great idea and you placed him in just the right spot. The Old World feel of this is so nice. Well done! |

I agree with all the previous comments. Giving the whole image a vintage feel was a good idea. My suggestion to anchor the book and doll would maybe just be to add the black shelf they're both sitting on to the mask you describe in your step #3. Books always have a way of offering a feeling of comfort; warm and fuzzy image! |

Love this image Alan! Your witch's brew is wonderful here. The colors and details are amazing and the intrigue is palpable. My only suggestion would be to crop off the light colored bricks at the top; my eye keeps getting pulled up there. I know you like to keep a certain ratio though, so maybe the background image could be lengthened before adding the other layers? Very nicely processed; great final result! |

This is great Candy! You selected very good elements to include. You did a great job of knocking down the highlights in the window and on the floor. I see what Steve and Alan are getting at with the comments about more contrast in the rest of the image, but the overall smokiness makes it feel like the ghost is coming into form from the ether that's present in the whole stairwell. I think maybe she just needs to be a bit brighter, so I used the Dodge tool set to midtones to lift her out of the background a bit. Very cool image; well imagined for sure! |

Your idea became... a great idea! You've masked and blended the elements together wonderfully. The carpenter looks very much like you, even before you gave him your eyes. I like the way you added the foreground pods or fruit at the top; that gives a lot of depth to the image. I like the bridge too, but I think it would compete with the face if it had too much prominence. Fun image; fun idea -- well executed! |

Thanks Steve -- glad it made you smile. I think the hitchhikers are going to have to at least have their temps taken and don their masks, but we'll definitely pick them up -- can't resist that cute little boy. |
