Group Round C/R Comment Date Image
9 May 24 Comment Hi everyone,

I'm excited to share that my photo "Urban Passage" received the highest honors award in my Camera Club, scoring a 9! Here are the judge's comments:

"Conveys a good story
Good use of light
Has definite impact
Original treatment of the subject
Strong composition
What a sophisticated, intelligent image-lots going on in this excellent shot. The contrast of the women walking away from us looks beautifully choreographed, like a ballet. And the strong posture and firm gaze of the central figure walking towards us, all in black, creates a disturbing tension. Great work-my only criticism is that the vignette is a bit too strong."

I'm incredibly grateful for all your feedback and support. It's wonderful to be part of such an inspiring and insightful community!

9 May 24 Comment Douglas, the way the three people stand out against the lighter background immediately draws attention. Their direct gazes toward the camera effectively engage viewers.

Your narrative about capturing this moment during your visit to Cuba adds meaningful context. The photo not only highlights a simple chess match but also reflects the resilience and spirit of the Cuban people.

Technically, your use of Lightroom to enhance colors and adjust lighting has resulted in a vivid and well-balanced image. I appreciate that you kept the photo in its original rectangular format, as it suits the composition and maintains the integrity of the scene.

Overall, you've captured a compelling moment that tells a deeper story about your experience.

9 May 24 Reply Thank you, Yvonne! I love your idea of calling it 'Life Passage.' The generational contrast was exactly what I aimed to capture. I appreciate your suggestion about darkening the blacks for more depth, though I'm still considering if I want to make that adjustment. And the Beatles' Abbey Road reference is fantastic-such an iconic image! So glad you enjoyed the photo. May 24th
9 May 24 Reply Thanks for your thoughts, Douglas! The man didn't have any particular reaction to me taking his photo-one of those candid street photography moments. You're right; generally, public places allow for such shots. Interesting observation about his shopping bags and appearance! It's fun to imagine the stories behind the people we capture. 'Slightly aging hipster' made me smile-could very well be! May 24th
9 May 24 Reply Thank you, Sylvia! I'm glad you noticed how the women frame the man. Black and white really helps emphasize those elements and the overall contrast in the scene. I'm happy you enjoyed the shot! May 24th
9 May 24 Reply Thanks for your feedback, Cindy! I'm glad the group of girls caught your eye too. My aim was to capture that dynamic contrast between the man and the girls, highlighting the different aspects of urban life. I agree that black and white helps keep the focus on the essential elements without distractions. Appreciate your thoughts and glad you enjoyed the image! May 24th
9 May 24 Reply Thanks, Sabine! I'm glad you noticed the contrasts in the photo, both in terms of colors and behaviors. Your interpretation adds another layer of depth to the image, and I appreciate your insights.

As for photography laws in the United States, they're similar in that we can generally take photos of people in public spaces without their consent, as long as there's no expectation of privacy. However, there are nuances and exceptions, especially regarding commercial use and privacy concerns. It's definitely something to be mindful of when capturing street scenes.

Thanks again for your thoughtful critique and kind words!

9 May 24 Comment Hi Cindy, Your image "Moonlite Aurora" is breathtaking! The green aurora against the snowy mountains is truly spectacular. Capturing this moment in Coldfoot, Alaska, on March 20 of this year must have been incredible. Seeing such a stunning aurora is definitely going on my bucket list!

Your use of a tripod and specific camera settings has effectively captured the beauty of the aurora. Overall, "Moonlite Aurora" is a stunning portrayal of nature's awe-inspiring beauty.

9 May 24 Comment Hi Jim, The bridge and its reflection in the water create an intriguing composition, drawing the viewer into the scene. However, a slightly wider crop on the left could enhance the overall balance of the image.

Your description of capturing the footbridge on a warm, humid September day adds depth to the photo, especially with the visible mist in the background. Your efforts to convey the atmospheric conditions at the time of the shot are evident and commendable.

Overall, this is a captivating image that effectively transports viewers to Somerville Bridge in Maine.

9 May 24 Comment Hi Sylvia, The velvet purple iris stands out elegantly in the center of the image, with its short stem adding a unique charm against the black background.

Your mention of your husband's role in creating the charming studio with black boards adds a delightful layer of context to the image. This personal touch not only enhances the visual appeal but also speaks to the care and creativity behind the photograph.

The composition emphasizes the details of the iris beautifully, allowing viewers to appreciate its delicate features. The contrast against the black background further highlights its vivid color.

Overall, this is a stunning capture that showcases the beauty of your favorite flower.

9 May 24 Comment Doug, the way the three people stand out against the lighter background immediately draws attention.

I particularly like how you cropped the photo to a vertical format, which adds a dramatic effect and enhances the focus on the subjects.

Overall, you've captured a compelling moment that tells a deeper story about your experience.

9 May 24 Comment Yvonne, the colorful artwork in this photo immediately catches the eye and conveys a sense of community and creativity. Your narrative about the peaceful protest and the diverse involvement adds depth to the image.

Considering the challenges you faced with bright sunlight and discreetly taking the photo, you've done well to capture the essence of the scene. Despite the graininess from cropping and quick adjustments, the photo effectively highlights the children's art section.

For future shots, perhaps using HDR mode on your iPhone or a quick manual exposure adjustment could help manage bright conditions better. Overall, you've captured an important moment with a genuine and thoughtful approach.

9 May 24 Comment Hi Sabine, I really appreciate how the snail is the focal point of this image. The central placement and beautifully blurred background effectively highlight the subject.

Your story about searching for Hollow Larkspur adds a lovely narrative, and it's interesting how the rainy conditions led you to discover the snails.

Technically, the photo is well executed with a balanced depth of field at f/10 and thoughtful post-processing that enhances the snail's texture. The 30x20 crop complements the composition.

For improvement, you might try different angles or off-center compositions for added variety. Overall, your ability to find beauty in unexpected subjects is commendable.
