I agree with Joe, Peter and Dick. You chose a very difficult subject. |

I prefer your portrait version. It is a stronger image with more impact because it eliminates some distractions and reflects a more personal relationship with the dog. The image is sharp and monochrome is certainly the beat choice for processing. |

Great capture Dick. The all-important eye is sharp and the impaled fish tells the story. As mentioned by others, diminishing the background would be helpful and adding some negative space on the left might also improve the composition. |

I understand your choice of perspective because of the background issue. My preference though would be to see the individual swings. For this image I think darkening the sky would be helpful. I like the story-telling aspect and the monochrome treatment. |

My suggestions are to crop in from the left to eliminate the lighthouse and down from the top to remove some of the white clouds. Then brighten the entire train and the smoke from the engine. Also, a little more contrast in the sky to add drama would help. This image has a lot of potential but needs to feature the train. |

Thanks for the comments. The birds totally ignore the flash. |

A good close-up of the Raven, but the bright sky is a killer. You could correct that in Photoshop if you wanted to invest the time. The eyes need to be brighter also. Getting a great bird photo against a canopy with a bright sky is a virtually impossible task |

A good bird photo. The composition could be improved by cropping in from the right and bottom to eliminate distractions. It would also help to brighten the bird a bit since it is the subject. |

This is a nice landscape image with a good foreground subject. My suggestion is bring out more detail in that rock and increase the contrast with more saturated colors. The rock is a feature that should stand out. |

A good bird photo. Focus is sharp except got the white feathers which are over-exposed. You would greatly improve this image with suitable "negative space" in the direction the head is pointed (top fo frame.) |

A technically well-executed shot with good sharpness throughout. You could i improve the visual impact greatly by brightening the head and featuring that as the focal point. Through experience, I can testify that bird photography in the wild is one of the most technically challenging Photo genres. |

For the lizard, the head, and particularly the eye, is sharp which is the first rule of a successful animal photo. With a 200 mm lens, the depth of field is very shallow and the only chance of getting the rock and the grasshopper sharp would be to take three shots, one of each, and then combine them in Lightroom or Photoshop. My personal preference on the lizard would be to saturate the colors for more contrast and visual impact. |

Thanks for all the great comments. Dave, you are correct regarding the slight halos on the hoodoos. It was not a sharpening issue but happened in the Photoshop selection process. I have just never gone back and corrected that. Regarding the color of the sky, that is just an Artistic choice. |

Thanks for your comments Gary. As I mentioned, the landscape and sky were processed in two different photoshop layers since they each have quite different adjustments in tonal values, white balance, color, contrast, and brightness. The techniques for night photography with landscapes (Nightscapes) are quite detailed requiring a lot of planning, preparation, patience, and practice. |
