Hi Janice. Andrew invited me to comment on your very nice picture. I think this image successfully breaks the "rule" to have one main subject, as I see the thorny plant as an equal co-star to the little lizard. My only thought would be to consider cropping a bit to take out the background stem that goes along the bottom. I just used Lightroom but in Photoshop I might have rotated it more and added some canvas. Here's how a simple crop in LR looks. Nice job and Happy New Year.

Thanks Judith. I see what you mean about the upper left corner. The owl was preening although it certainly looks like it's asleep. Normally, when they sleep they stand straight and just close their eyes. They tend to doze, keeping an eye on the neighborhood. |

I love seeing the "bones" of the tree adorned with snow. The snow looks right to me. Great job. The composition is pleasing to my eye as well. No suggestions to share. Bravo |

I think you did a great job in post. I would consider removing the one strawbetty in the shadows and maybe darken the vegetation behind the tortoise or at least take that straight edge out. I'd play with darkening the strawberries just a bit and the shell to try to center more attention of the bite, which I consider the star of the show. Nice work. |

Pretty rocks and I would have also cropped it just as you have done to avoid that one bright rock in the corner. I'm not sure if I would do anthing differently with this one. |

I don't know what it says about me, but I love this kind of shot. I think you did a great job separating the subject from its background but it looks to my eye like you might have gone overboard. The hawk looks too different from its surrounding. I think a slight reduction on the highlights painted in to taste might work well. The water in the foreground also looks a bit unrealistic to me. I might reduce the opacity of the work you did in this area and let some of the underlying original water come through. Another thing you might try is the the lens blur filter in Lightroom. It's easy to go overboard with it but I've recently used it a lot and am happy with the results. Sometimes I'll reduce the opacity of the layer where I applied the effect to make it look more natural. This image is definitely worth playing with. |

Gorgeous scene. My thoughts when I first looked at it, besides recognizing the beauty, was that the bright clouds were distracting to my eye. Maybe if they were off to the right more, casting light on that side of the range it would be more pleasing. Of course, we take what we are given. I played with it and attempted to reduce the highlights in that area and add some to some of the clouds on the left side of the sky. To me, that looked more balanced. I then did a lot of dodging and burning, attempting to darken some shadows and lighten some highlights to give more depth to the scene. I also lightened up the foreground a bit, which seemed too dark for my taste. Finally, I cropped out some of the sky and added a touch of dehaze to add some punch. As always, just another subjective interpretation. |

Terrific work Sharon. I can imagine how hard it was to get this guy in the frame. I think it's wonderful as is but my thought was to slightly reduce the highlights in the back ground as well as on the back of the penguin. I selected the penguin and did a bit of burning on the back and feet and added a slight degree of dehaze. I inverted the selection and slightly lowered exposure and highlights. In retrospect, I might have also tried adding a custom vignette to draw even more attention to the bird. |
