Hi Catherine. I'm in Sharon's group, here visiting. I live in bird rich Florida, where Great Blues are a common target. We don't know each other so please take my comments with a large grain of salt. The only person who needs to like it is you. I agree with Sharon about the background. I particularly distracted by the white branches on the left side pointing at your subject. I'm also not sure what is just behind and under the bird. Is it a rock or stump. When subjects overlap things that do not enhance their shape or presentation, I view them as a distraction. Not much you could do about it here other than wait for the bird to take a different position. Last, it's hard for me to tell from this downsized image if the head of the bird is tack sharp. I think what I would do is blur and darken the background a bit to add some separation from your subject. |

Hi Julie. I like your image a lot. Great detail and a wonderful flight pose. I agree with Sharon that some dodging would be in order. Particularly the eye and lower portion of the face. You might also lighten the luminosity of red/orange on the feet and bill. I might also consider a slightly different crop. The space to the right of the bird seems empty to me and a square crop might work better to my eye. Congrats on a nice image. |

Thanks Ally. I don't know if getting one out of few thousand is talent but I'd give myself an A for effort. |

Fair comment. Blurs are definitely not for everyone. I like to play when the light is too low for a sharp image and sometimes come out with something I like. |

I agree and basically only shoot with myself as the intended audience. Interesting comment on the left to right issue. I usually look at it both ways. Sometimes it looks better one way, sometimes the other. Once consideration is the signature. I prefer it on the lower left and don't like a bird flying toward it. Mundane reason, I admit, but I think the logo is part of the image so I take it into account. |

Nice job. I agree with Lisa. My only suggestion would be to add a little blur to the part of the plant above and to the left of the bee that looks sharper than the others, and hence drew my attention. Great job. The colors and blend of sharp and soft are wonderful. |

Underwater is too hard for me. I play with it a bit and bought but haven't used yet the Olympus with a housing that the underwater photography world thinks highly of, particularly for macro. I found it hard to find the jawfish in the image and if there is enough resolution, agree that a crop would help a viewer identify your subject. At 40' there isn't much color available without artificial light, so blues and greens is primarily what you get. You've inspired me to take another swing at it myself, once the water warms up that is. |

Lions are my absolute favorite animal. When they aren't sleeping, they are entertaining to watch. These guys are cute and I like the line up. My first impression, when I saw the black and white was that it was embossed or had some kind of affect to it. While I often prefer B & W, when I have the courage to not use the color information, in this case I'm partial to the color. I played with it and toned down the colors of the background and enhanced those and the luminance of the cubs. |

Picking up on the comments, the new sky selection, inverted, would allow you to dodge the leaves without affecting the sky, assuming it makes a nice selection.
I like the composition and your management of the colors looks perfect to me. My only want would be to have a bit more foreground so the people aren't so close to the edge. Nonetheless, I like it a lot. |

I love wood ducks as well and you captured a nice wing flap of this beauty. I like your crop but may have left a tiny bit more space behind the bird and not so much in front. I think a subtle vignette would be help center the attention on the stars of the show. Nice work. |

I agree with everyone's comments. Comparing the original to the processed version, it appears that the yellows could be toned down, as well as the feathers under the bill, with just a bit of work.
Unless you have contest or personal restrictions, I would remove a few things. The little white area above and behind the heron, the small floater near its perch, and the sticks in front of the perch. I would also tone down what it is standing on to look more like the original. Their brightness and sharpness I think pulls my eye away from the eye of the bird.
Wonderful image. I'm a firm believer, by the way, that the birds are watching us and wait for us to turn away to fly. It's their version of fun. |
