Hi Catherine. I'm from group 52 and wanted to take a look at your nice closeup of pelican chicks. Living in Florida, the only place I've been able to see them is in the dunes near Jacksonville, not very close to the camera. I like what you did in post. I might suggest more dodging and burning in an attempt to tone down the dappled light which is what you had to contend with. I like the vignette that Gary added. It may be natural, but there seems to be a very slight blue color cast on the chicks. I might add a very light tough of warmth to them and compare how it looks. Nice work. |

Thanks Judith. Sony a1 with a Sony 200-600 at 300mm, 1/1000 sec at f/6.3, ISO 320. Going by memory (not very reliable in my case) I'd say I was 350'. I positioned myself as quickly as possible so that they would pass in front of the setting sun in order to get a yellow backlit image. I was pleasantly surprised that I could pull out some detail in their bodies in post. |

I like it better and understand the conundrum. Of course, if your goal is competition you are constrained in what you can do. Some competitions allow very little and none allow removal or addition of elements unless it is in a special creative category. I'll keep those constraints in mind in future comments. |

What are the chances! I like the serendipity of the flower catching the coin but as an image it doesn't work for me. I'm not sure I would have noticed the coin without the point out. Also, when I open the image there are artifacts on the contrast edges and too much noise for my taste. The coin itself looks bigger than a penny and has red tones that don't look natural to me. |

I love the antics and action you captured of the squirrels. The one looks like he's going to have a knot on his head! I'd suggest thinking about darkening the background further to help separate the subject from the background. |

It is beautiful and a destination way up on my bucket list. I like your crop but in comparing it to the original, it looks like you took off some glow from the sun. I think I would try to process in the other direction and attempt to boost the glow of the sun to help balance the weight of the trees. I think I would also remove what looks like a dead tree trunk just on the side of the sun. |

I like the composition a lot and am immediately attracted to the image. You proved that you can make a sun star using 2.8, and a good one at that. Great job in post to make a wonderful image. |

I also recently went through Palouse for the first time a few weeks ago. I was only there for a short time and also had extreme wind to deal with. I went to Steptoe in the morning but wasn't lucky on the sunrise and the wind made it impossible to use vegetation as a foreground. I like your composition emphasizing the organic curves of the land, and the purple field. I didn't see that when I was there. I think the image would benefit a great deal by adding even more contrast. It looks subdued to my eye. |

I find it very difficult to shoot butterflies as they don't allow much time between movements and often aren't parallel to the plane of focus. I like the interaction, and am attracted to the faceoff being shown. I am bothered a bit by the leaf in front of the Red Spotted Purple and it's wings are not as tack sharp as the other butterfly. I also liked the dark background in the original and wanted to tone down the green leaves behind the subject. For fun, I did an aggressive crop and used content aware to remove the leaves as shown. I used Topaz sharpen selectively on the upport portion of the dark wing and also darked the background, desaturation the green a bit as well. |

Hi Lisa. It was a marathon of a trip and I'm planning on posting pictures on my social media sites of each place in the order I visited. I started out from Durango, CO, where I keep my van (rv). From there I went to Dugway, then Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, went through Grand Tetons and Yellowstone to Palouse, then on to Washington where I spend a few weeks photographing fox and eagles, then on to Cannon Beach on my way to Sea Ranch, CA, then Santa Rosa, Point Reyes, Elkhorn Slough, then a visit with a friend in Carson Valley NV, back to Durango. Whew! It was a two month trip that was about 2 weeks to long in my retrospective opinion. In case you don't have it, I post on Facebook as mike.cohen.182, flickr as mykeyc (my favorite social media site) and instragram as mykeycohen (my least favorite social media site.) Mike |
