Thanks Judith. I wasn't too close and on a boardwalk above the gator, completely out of danger. Maybe 8-10 feet away. |

Sharpening is an art more than a science. Most people over sharpen a bit before they get the hang of it. I use several methods. If you use LR, its default sharpening is 25% which is usually a good overall import setting. Try holding the Alt button and moving the mask slider and it will remove the effect from smooth areas. (I don't use it as I use Noiseware to both reduce noise and do some import sharpening. Import sharpening, in case you aren't familiar, is doing some minor sharpening to the whole image to counter the softness most digital cameras create to avoid moire patterns. I generally use unsharp mask in PS. I generally have the amount between 80-120, Radius between .5 - 1.5, and threshold at 0. The key is masking out the effect where I don't want it, such as on smooth areas. I may do one layer for the eyes, and other layers for other parts of the image. LR is also good. You can add selective sharpening using the adjustment brush. Lastly, I also often use High Pass is PS which is under the Filter's tab in "Other". I like High Pass a lot.
Friends tell me they love Topaz but I'm not familiar with it. |

Cool critter. Nice background behind it and the leaves on the right are very interesting, and kind of mimic the anatomy of the wasp. My only critical comment would be sharpness. It seems to my eye that the orange material to the left of the wasp's head is the sharpest part of the image. I might soften that a bit with a blur or negative clarity and add some to portions of the wasp. |

Very pretty and a powerful composition in my opinion. I love the color pallet and particularly the splashing water on the lower right side. The green and the yellows go wonderfully together. I'm sure due to the great volume of water it was hard to keep the water from blowing out but you managed to do it. The only thought I can add is to see what effect adding some clarity just to the water would have, and maybe bring down the highlights on the left side. That said, I like it as is. |

I sent Sharon two images and, again, got the sizing wrong. Sorry for the bother Sharon. Anyway, this obviously is one strange looking Meadowlark, unless it just gotten eaten.
This shot is a bucket list shot of a baby gator on mom's head. I knew about the family and kept going back, and back, and back until I finally got this shot, and one of another baby on the head facing back toward's mom's tail. They climb up from her tail and make their way to her head, which she doesn't seem to mind at all.
I removed some grass that was sticking up in front of mom's jaw and can't recall what else I did.

Well done Tom and Happy Father's Day! I like it a lot and love the power wing forward position as well as the trailing drops of water. The bird in the water balances the image and to me adds interest. I wouldn't change anything but stretching to come up with an idea I might try some negative clarity or a partial blur on the water in the distance.

I like the image but I'm a bit confused by your description, I'm sure do to submitting two images. You mention the foxes so I'm not sure if the settings you mention apply to this image or the other, although the closed eye mention makes me think it's this one. The paw of one of the kit's shows blur, which is surprising at 1/8000, making me again doubt that the setting applies to this image.
Aside from all that, I like the image as it shows the great patience a mother must have with two young leopards at play. It's like she's sharing her burden with the viewer.
As to zoo pictures, I think they are fine as long as they are not portrayed as wild. |

Major wow factor Sharon. Congrats on a beauty. I think you got lucky with the sky as clouds might have competed with the falls and I like the orange glow on the horizon. The only suggestion I can offer is to reduce the highlights a bit on the foreground and maybe do a bottom vignette so that one's eye goes right to the falls.
I can't tell from this small image size but this might be a good candidate for my rock sharpening settings I learned from Glenn Randall. Unsharp mask at 30, 30, 0. Mask out the sky and water and just apply it to the rocks if it makes a difference that you like. |
