Thanks. My fingers are crossed for you. Let's touch base after the 22nd when I get back in town. |

Thanks Judith. Yes, they really do whistle. They frequent the local nature centers and one can hear them as they fly in circles overhead. |

I like the composition and pose. It shows the wariness of the hawk. I think this is a red shouldered hawk, but I'm not sure. My eye goes immediately to the face of the hawk, which is ideal in my opinion. The prey is a bonus!
The only suggestion I have would be to remove the out of focus leaves under the tail, leaving in the one that is green but taking out the ones that were farther back. Also, although the bird looks very sharp, I would add a touch of sharpening, one way or another, to just the bird. |

I love the colors. The yellow contrasting against the blue is delightful. I agree that cropping a bit off the top may improve the image as the star for me is the wonderful blue water and not the upper clouds. Depending upon your philosophy regarding the "hand of man" in post processing, I would fill in the hole in the clouds as I think it pulls the eye in that direction but doesn't really add anything to the scene. |

My personal preference for a shot like this is more of a pano. If I left the size alone, I would remove the slight cloud which stands alone in the upper left. (A very minor distraction to me however.)
I took a hand at it: After cropping it as shown, I added some color and sharpened just the pines in a group in the center of the image before the rock wall. I also lightened up the image which seemed to need it.

Interesting image and story. I'm glad there are rehab places like this one in operation. On the leveling, I agree with Lisa. I like the wave in the water and the diagonal in the original confused me as the grass in the background looked level. I was also bothered by what I presume is dirt in the front of the "bath" enclosure.
I'm not sure it would meet our Group's parameters, but a wider shot of the facility would be interesting to me.
I think the unsharp mask settings I gave Lisa were low amount, 30, and high radius of 30, zero threshold. I normally see what that does with rocks, for example, but generally for other subjects I stay with the more normal settings, starting with an amount of 80-120 and a radius of .5-2, leaning toward the lower end of this spectrum. I also do the sharpening on a separate layer so I can mask out portions I don't want to sharpen or reduce the effect as necessary.

I'll ditto Lisa's comments. I like this a lot in monochrome and think you did a wonderful job in post. I particularly like the different wing positions and direction.
The only suggestion I can make is to make the border a tiny bit thinner. This would allow a bit more space between the upper wing and may be more pleasing. I would also consider adding a drop shadow to the inside of the border to add a feeling of depth, like a mat would do in a printed picture.
Very nice! |
