Thanks for your suggestion, Aavo. I think it works better with softer mountains. |

By the way, I not only know what an egg cup is, but I used to have a pair. ;0) |

I love the surreal feeling of this image, Brad. The serene sunset sky with the placid ocean in the distance really highlights the motion of the foreground. The soft flow of wispy water is gorgeous. The layers of where the water is flowing really add to the feeling of motion for me.
I think centering the black rock works really well; it feels solid and immovable to me, with all the water crashing around it. The smaller rock to the left balances out the swirls of water around itself.
Your original images seem to all have different white balances, and for me it makes the color of the final image feel less cohesive. I added a Lookup Color adjustment layer here to show the difference adding a filter might make.
The breaking wave at the left felt unnaturally linear. Maybe that was intentional, but I found it disconcerting, so I also cloned in a little water to soften the edge. |

What a fun image, Alan! I really admire the balance of your composition here. I think most people would have centered the doors, but the way you have positioned everything gives me a wonderful feeling of everything being just a hair away from falling apart.
Like Kirsti, I think the horse looking off to the left is a nice balance to the woman in red going off to the right. I applaud your having her leaving the frame - I think this is a great example of when the usual advice should be ignored.
I love the dancers coming out of the floor.
Personally, I prefer your original version. |

This is so interesting, Maria. I love the three other-worldly figures forming such a familiar family group. The background is fascinating. It's nearly symmetrical but not quite, which really adds to the interest for me. I love the rounded pyramid forms, and the way the main pyramid frames the family. The lined texture in the sky is really interesting; it adds a surreal touch for me - are they enclosed? I think the tree adds a familiar touch that heightens the surreal feeling for me.
My one suggestion is that the image is so far left on the histogram, I'd consider doing a levels correction. |

I love the way you develop these difficult images, Kirsti! It's such a cool idea.
I think the girl's expression and lifted spoon fit this perfectly. I think her size really conveys that feeling of separation in time as well as physically.
I know my laptop monitor is generally set dimmer than most people prefer, but I had to turn the brightness all the way up to max to see the curved lines and bokeh. Then I thought "WOW!" I think they really are key to your story here, so I agree with Aavo that they would be more effective if they are brighter.
I like Brad's idea of the older version of the girl looking on. I'd love to see that if you decide to try that out. |

You have such a great imagination, Aavo! Your images always make me smile.
I love your line of pelicans on their allotted posts, with the odd bird out in the middle.
I think your composition really works, with the pelicans in the distance and the dive-bombing bird making a circle that moves my eye around the image. I like the way the dive-bombing bird is pointing right down to the tropical bird.
I think you could have used a cutout of the dive-bombing bird without any adjustments, just tilting the cutout.
On the other hand, you've introduced a sort of cartoon element with the dive-bombing bird and the tropical bird, which reminds me of "Jessica Rabbit", with real people and cartoon characters in the same frame. For me, that makes this very funny, because the pelicans's body language is just what I would expect of them if some cartoon characters did show up.

That's lovely, Aavo! I think your title is perfect.
Excellent suggestion about adding some pink haze over the mountain - I had not noticed how much that mountain stood out. Thanks! |

Thanks, Alan.
I think your version is indeed more attuned to the title and works really well.
Personally, I prefer my images to have some hope ; I'm just that glass-half-full person.
I do appreciate your doing a masterly job of providing an alternative approach. |

Thank you so much, Kirsti!
I'm so glad you noticed the chimpanzee's head lifting that little bit - to me that little connection makes a difference. |
