Thanks, Brad!
Yes, now that I've had it a while, I think I might play with the colors some more. I had not thought about changing the lighting, but that would be interesting too. |

A great idea, Brad, beautifully executed! You incorporated the waterfall in a very natural way. It makes me laugh that you used the original image as the phone screen, and modified the "real" background.
It feels like an update to the old saying of "the camera never lies".
Your attention to edges and proportions paid off, that all works very well.
I'm curious about the mountains in the background. Since they are in your original that way, I presume it was hazy and there were patches of snow? They are so flat and mid-tone. It doesn't affect your image, I am just curious.
My only suggestion is that the hand holding the phone feels a little too well lit to me, compared to the rest of the scene. I would consider a tad less brightness.

This is very cool too! I can see why you have explored variations on this. |

This is a great image, Alan! It's beautifully crafted. At first it seems as if having the perfectly fitted chess boards in a 3D space is what it's all about, and then I discovered the little surprises of sunken squares and the trap door. It definitely gave me that feeling of surreal disorientation.
Thank you for the detailed explanation of how you created the sunken squares. They look great.
I really love the trap door. For me, the chess piece coming out of it doesn't quite work. I wonder if you've considered not having anything emerging yet, leaving the possibilities open to the viewer.

Such an interesting image! I love the soft shades of the clouds and how they are echoed in the colors of the snow. The light streaming down from the clouds is just where it should be to make the snow pile that bright.
I can really feel the cold.
The trees are very interesting shapes, and the pelicans are interesting too. For me, they compete with each other. I would consider choosing one or the other but not both. |
