54 May 21 Comment Thanks Neil!
You're right, she is falling out of the frame a bit. I think it will work better with the frame extended a bit to the right and down. Good suggestion!

54 May 21 Reply Kathy, I want you to know that there are no restrictions in this group in using stock photos or Mischief Circus or other sources.
I understand what Alan is saying, and in a general way I think we all want to use our own photographs when possible. However, given the strong emphasis on creativity and image manipulation in this group, I think it is important that we all have the freedom to use whatever sources we need to create an image. Sometimes the imagination outstretches our photographic libraries.
This is a very creative and fun image, and I would have been sad to miss it. I am very glad you shared it with us, and encourage you to do so in the future. Just offhand, I would say that using outside sources for originals maybe 3 times a year is just fine.

54 May 21 Reply Thanks, Alan! I had not thought of it that way, but I see just what you mean.
I'll give the shadows a try. Thanks for your suggestion.

54 May 21 Reply Thanks for your version, Kathy. It's always really interesting to see the direction someone else might take with an image.
I really like the way the gorillas look in your version, and I love the background, but for me they don't fit together quite as I would like.
Can you tell me what you did to the image? I'd like to duplicate the two bits separately for two different images.

I thought so too, and part of the reason I submitted this image was to see if I was just being too picky. I think that while doing a high key of such dark subjects reveals a lot of details that are normally hard to see, it also makes it difficult to keep the same level of texture everywhere. Well, it was an interesting experiment.
I might try this again sometime with something else in the baby's place.

54 May 21 Reply Thanks, Aavo!
I originally tried a darker background but felt it made the image too dark, because the gorillas have so much dark fur. Maybe a vignette would help though. I'll try that.

54 May 21 Comment Such a creative idea!
The water original is such a great image even by itself. I am definitely going to keep my eyes open for something like that.
The sharpness of the fish is not an issue for me; I don't expect it to be fully materialized yet. I love the expression on its face, as if it's not quite sure if it wants to come out, and may dart away any moment.
The colors are lovely, and I like the way the hands and flow of the water all direct my eye right to the fish.

Personally, I'd like to see this image from a step further away, seeing the background morph from normal to the flowing water, and a bit more of the hands. Then the story would be clear even without the title.

54 May 21 Comment I love the light and airy feeling of this image.
I think your composition is very effective. The floor and everything on it feels heavy and solid, and the sky and clouds go up and up, giving me a feeling of the open sky. I like the way my eye travels from the rocking chair on to the right out through the window.
The neutral earth tones of the the solid things contrast nicely with that beautiful blue sky.
It's a very serene image, possibly just a touch sedate. Everything is exactly in its place. I wonder if some very small surprise was added on the floor if that would be interesting. Maybe not; just a thought.

54 May 21 Comment There's a lot to like in this image, Neil. I think you did a great job getting them both sharp and well composed and well exposed. The man is so serious and the camel is a delight. Both the man and camel have great detail in b&w.

Personally, I find your new background somewhat busy, and I miss the sense of place that the originals have.
My favorite is your original #3, because I love the camel's face in that one. I would consider just adding a bit of texture and lightening shadows. When I do portraits, my personal tendency is to choose gesture over technical precision any day. I know not everyone feels the same.

54 May 21 Comment Alternatively, I might try applying Camera Raw white balance auto.

Just my personal preference. I love the image.

54 May 21 Comment A very creative image!
I love the colors and the vibrancy and how the fire from the dragon's mouth changes into smoke at the end. The setting feels very mystical to me, and the astral swirls in the upper left corner are a treat.
I love the title!

My first impression when I saw this is that the white balance of the background is different from that of the characters (dragon, fairies). It makes me feel they don't quite belong together. I might consider using a Photoshop color lookup layer to align them.

54 May 21 Comment Very interesting, Aavo! A very balanced and satisfying composition.

I particularly like the way the hillside has become a band of colors. I think adding noise worked well. How did you process the original besides adding noise? And how did you create the road? I love the texture it has.
