I love the background! I think it's very creative and rather magical in its colors and little flames or hairs or other mysterious bits growing off.
I think the monkeys are a great addition. I really like how the upper parts of the tree limbs seem to grow out of the background.
I like the way the tail of the monkey in the lower right corner points back to the
group of monkeys.
For me, it would be really interesting to make the background more 3D, perhaps using transform/warp on another layer with a little Liquify thrown in. Then the monkeys could be peering through the holes, or maybe the tree limbs growing through it. The attached is a rough version of what I'm trying to describe.

Fabulous image, Alan!
So much of photography is about showing people's faces, but this works so well just because we don't see their faces.
Great composition - the two people are balanced by the bright garden seat in the distance. I love the crispness of the people's figures.
I find it very interesting that in the original, the woman looks very relaxed, but in the slice we see of her in the final image, her hand hanging straight down suggests tension and the swirl of her skirt suggests she is hurrying. The man's posture raises even more questions as to what is going on.
These are just nits, but for me, the blue sky and trees might work better with less contrast. And some picky judge is going to tell you the bricks aren't straight across the top.

I love how your images always tell a story, Betty, with the ending left up to our own imaginations.
I think the black and white of the cat works really well with the light and dark of the vase.
That purple path draws me right into the image.
Such a great expression on the cat! The way it's looking sort of out of the corner of its eye makes me feel as if it's got something planned, and is just gathering itself to pounce.
Such a great spider original! The processing makes me feel as if it's painted on rather than real, which then makes me feel as if the flowers are painted as well. It would be interesting to see it closer to the original detail.

I really like how you've shown so much of the building, and its size compared to the people and the portal. It definitely gives me the feeling of the building and the people of being solidly in the same plane.
That feeling is enhanced for me by how you've chosen the colors of both to be from the same palette.
The sunshine inside and yellow tones do create some feeling of "otherness' for me. I really like that. The fact that both parts of the image are all in midtones of similar sharpness/contrast makes me feel that maybe this is all just reality. It would be interesting, as Brad suggests, to enhance the "otherness" feeling for that magic side of the portal.
All that said, I want to go that portal, wherever it is. It looks very intriguing . |

I think your placement of the virus balls is really effective.
I agree with Kathy that the big one is so close as to create tension, which for me feels very much in sync with the woman's expression.
Well done on her eye placement. She seems to be looking directly at that large ball, and oblivious to the impending arrival of the ones to come.

Wow, you've got sharp eyes, Brad! I finally found that stray bit. Thanks for pointing it out.
And thank you for your comments!
I definitely see what you mean about the foreground element. There is something so very wistful about the Wyeth painting.
Perhaps you are right about a crop, but perhaps the discomfort of being top heavy is part of the isolation story here. I appreciate the suggestion. I think I need to look at it in the coming days to figure out which way I like it better. Thanks! |
