I think you are both right. I think cloning out the ice trail might work.

This is very nicely done. The exposure is right on. I find the first step (or what appears to be a first step) is a minor distraction. I can 't quite tell what it is and I think a viewer may spend too mcuh effort to puzzle it out and not really focus on the main part of the image.
I would experiment with lightening the background just a little more and cut down the high lights on top of the laundry with creating a grey area you can without creating |

My very subjective opinion: the composition of the various objects in your photograph is excellent. The color original is beautiful, and with your crop in the b&w, it would just a wonderful photograph. The b&w rendition doesn't touch me. The waterfall is really nice. The wet rocks are beautifully detailed and sharp, and the dark water provides tonal variety. The back ground and sky are too flat. I think the problems is that the sky is not interesting, and in my opinion, the rest of the background needs much more contrast. The color version has good color contrast in B&w the background just doesn't have enough tonal contrast. It just needs more work |

The composition is,I think very good. If you have a little room on the right to include a little more of the wall on the right to strengthen the implied zig-zag leading line, I would widen the scene a bit. For my taste, it is too blue. Toning a B&W photo often enhances the the tones, but coloring usually does not. In your photo, it diminishes the tonal separation and makes the photo flat. The sky is particularly flat, even though the clouds to have interesting shadings which could be more developed. There is a utility pole in the left background. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. In club competition judges are likely to drop a point for that. I think it does not detract from the picutre, but it doesn't add anything useful. |
