The composition is really nice. I think the problem is that in B&W the sky is not interesting. In Silver EFEX you might try using the orange or red filter to create some contrast or shading, lightening the orange and darkening the blue.

I fully agree with Sharon and your update hits me as just right. I think the trouble with the highlights being so bright is that they detract from the sad story the photograph is trying to tell. |

This photo reminds me of the Bruegel (spelling?) that are crammed full of people in a seemingly disorganized composition. I really respond to the details, which are held together by the repetition of lines running front to back and diagonal to the right. I do think that the out of focus circular bowl and round barrel on the lower left in the foreground are distracting. I would crop them.
the toneal variations and balance are excellent |

I like this kind of landscape and this is nicely compsed--I hope you weren't driving. A well regarded Norwegian photographer, I met on my Norway trip suggested stsrongy that leading lines are more powerful if they do not originate in the corners. I had never heard that before but after reviewing a whole lot of my pictures, I came to agree with him. So I woud crop a bit off the bottom to get the leading line of the road side grass out of the right hand bottom corner. I might darken the light areas of the sky. |
