One benefit that I hadn't realised is that LR balanced all the images for exposure. |

The stairs go all the way up to the fourth floor - outside to the centre and then repeated. The original lifts are still in place, though all the hidden workings have been updated. |

In the second suggestion I cropped the top and increased Clarity in Lightroom to bring more detail out of the roots. I also looked at a mono version, however, that lost the feel and colour of the original. |

I also wondered what the main subject was, though I love the the colours. I've done 2 possible versions. This one crops the bottom to put more emphasis on the tree and the wonderful soft light in the water. |

I like all the elements as they are as they all add to the story. I also like the other suggestions as well, though not quite as much! |

I love the detail and the placing of the heron. Now, those twigs - I like them and dislike them at the same time. They add to the habitat and the story. Maybe just removing the twig that sticks into the main part of the wing would also work to tell the story and reduce the distraction. |

I think your ISO is just right. The grain/noise is there to give the feeling of an old film documentary image - a higher ISO may have prompted you to reduce the noise and lose that effect. The B&W works so well with this composition. |

I like this as it is. The darkness helps with the feeling of hard work and, as Harley has put so well, the toil and sweat. I think the false leg works as it is because it is something else to discover. |

The benefits of being almost last to comment - it has all been said already! My first thoughts were that it works in B&W because of the possible colour clashes, though it needs a little more contrast - in LR CC and Camera Raw the Clarity slider could be a help with that. I also like the suggested crop. |
