Great suggestion, Tom. I like your crop.
I was trying for a more environmental shot to establish place, solitude, and desolation. But as you say, the title should change to reflect that.
I was worried that I was making the house too HDR-ish. Your thoughts?
Thanks. |

Thanks, Allen. The subject matter is obviously there, just waiting for the capture. The main problem was finding a place to pull over and photograph.

Thanks, Lisa. It was our first visit to the area, after seeing images of it for years. We got caught up with it and actually visited on three different days, including one with snow.

Thanks, Sharron. The lines and curves were fantastic.
BTW, that building is actually a chicken coop. The outhouse was in between the two structures, but showing it ruined the flow of the composition and the house then blocked the trees and fields. So this version is sans outhouse.

Thanks, Donna. Regarding the trees on the left, I was trying to hold true to what I saw in a documentary sense, but agree that I could have cropped them tighter with no loss of story. |

Jim, you turned an ordinary image into art! The reversing of lighting and shadows, along with the tonal switch creates a familiar, yet unusual, image that teases the eyes and confuses the brain. Way to go!

Great tonal range and depth throughout the image (benefit of f/27). Excellent light source with no hot spots.
I was surprised with the 6 second exposure. Since the noise in your camera is low until ISO 800, why not increase ISO to say 400 and shorten the exposure time to 3 seconds? Would there be different results?
You make it very difficult to find details to improve, so you will have to submit to the complements. WELL DONE, TOM!

Excellent poise of a difficult shot, Lisa. Good recovery of a so-so color shot to monochrome with more impact. Good elimination of the poor details on the right side, but I would have tried f/8 to achieve sharper hair details on the right side. I agree with Tom on the eye details and some dodging and burning to show implied depth.

I like the full crop due to the flow and the symmetry, but I feel increasing the contrast and sharpness could benefit the image. It may change the character of the image in your mind's eye, but I wanted to see more of the structure of the pedals and at the same time darken the background.
Your thoughts?
