It is always better in this situation to underexpose rather overexpose the photo. The "ghostly" figure is of course due to a longer exposure time. Works well here. As to the streak of lights, this is the only thing overexposed in this image. I would imagine this steak of lights is a reflection from a point behind the photographer. |

Some nice reflection in lower right, middle and towards the back. Good exposure. The leaves in the water are good too! Did you want your name to appear left middle? |

Very good composition and good black and white tones. I agree with Stephen about the low view taken here. It adds quite a bit. I was in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. |

This certainly tells a story! Very creative what you did here. This is street photography at its finest. I looked up the "Eastland". I didn't know about this tragedy. |

This is quite an action photo. Significant impact! I like the composition and the exposure is quite good considering the light. You had good timing here. It would seem that the flame providing the lighting for the rest of the photo. I think this guy has a death wish. |

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this image. It was taken at a site known as the "Seven Churches". These ruined chapels, monastic houses, and fragments of a high cross date from the 8th to the 11th centuries. Rick Steves, a well known travel writer, describes the site as visually unimpressive. I would disagree with that. The site itself is noteworthy from a historic and architectural perspective. I walked throughout these ruins and found many things to photograph. There are graves there as well. This lonely figure visiting a grave in such poor weather spoke to me of fortitude and harsh living conditions. Sorrow and dedication. I actually used a filter to change the detail I the arch as I wanted to focus on the figure. Life on the Aran Islands is hard. The people are special! There are over seven thousand miles of stone walls on Inishmore (the largest Aran island). The stones of Inishmore tell a story. The people cleared the stony land to make it arable. Also, the British required Irish families to divide their land among all their sons. This doomed even the largest estates to fragmentation, shrinking lots to sizes just large enough to starve a family. |
