50 Mar 21 Comment Both of those look better, I like how you opened the shadows better on the 1x1 crop, but like the horizontal one for composition better, I like how the wood texture shows up. You might also add a slightly more of a vignette maybe -10 more. Just remember that light areas attract your eye and tends to be forward looking and blacks tend to recede in the image. So playing with you whites and blacks tend to direct your viewers eye. I think you have achieved this in this image.

I think you have a good image and a good eye for finding an image. Nice job.

50 Mar 21 Comment You come up with some great ideas and carry them out well. I think the lighting is great and the detail in the twine is also very good and interesting. I would not change anything, other than next time watch the ISO setting, but you really don't see any noise in the image, so I guess that was not a problem. I don't have any suggestions for improvements. Mar 27th
50 Mar 21 Comment I agree that the pods on the right are better than the ones on the left. What you need to do is try to isolate the pod, so next time try to find one that is taller and that does not have anything right behind it. Then use a shallow depth of field to just get the pod in focus let the background go blurry. Even if you can get some depth between the pod and the background, then you can blur it in Photoshop. That is what I tried to do in the example below, it is not a clean extraction of the pod to the background, but maybe it gives you a better idea of what I am talking about. I am able to get this type of shot using a normal wide-angle lens but shot wide open and up close to the pod. I still do it handheld, but I am just very careful as to what is right behind the pod. 50 Mar 21 Comment I love wood and the textures in your image are very interesting. Your member is right, I would crop some off on the left and then I would do a slight vignette of the corners to direct your eye more to the center area of the image. There is a lot to keep your eye moving in the center, the left side does not have enough detail to hold your interest.

PS: the PSA website is very confusing, I still get lost in trying to find things in it and I have been using it for many years now. They are bringing out a new one soon, hopefully, that one will be better.

Entering competition can be both helpful and frustrating, it all depends on the judges and their point of view, so don't let it discourage you if you do poorly (although the images you are showing us are pretty good) it can be a learning experience for comparing your images to others in the same competition.

50 Mar 21 Comment I like the color better, the flower stands out more against the green background, in the mono, the background and the flower are close to the same grey, I would try to darken the background more as Michael suggested to make the flower stand out more.

I did try running the color image through Nik Silver efex using the green filter, which gives a light background and makes the flower darker.
