I'm dutifully frightened and submissive before the threatening front end of this car framed by a similarly ominous sky. You are visible in the mirrored chrome of the bumper; but you are distorted enough by the ripples so that, to this cowed viewer, it doesn't very much matter. The overall effect is enhanced by the amiable, sharply focused foliage in the foreground: bad things are on the way for us all, even the humble plants of a wildflower field. Yikes ! |

The vast view of harmoniously rolling hills, alternatively dusty and green, is very attractive. But my eye keeps returning to the abrupt transition between dusty and green, the transition running horizontally from just left of center to the right edge: especially the transition in the snaking irrigation stream. I can't tell if the stream is suddenly dipping below sight and then more broadly re-emerging; or if this confusing effect is an artifact produced by HDR layering. |

The first sentence of your description, Sol, almost completely sums up my own reaction.
Small quibble: a little overexposed in highlights and mid-tones.
A fine photo of an significant moment in the growth of this creature. "It's" a what by the way?

Beautiful color palette and composition. The highlights, especially lower left of center, seem distractingly overexposed. Some of the foreground tentacles on the left are out of focus and distract my eye from the central figure. If you return to the aquarium, try the same photo with faster shutter speeds and greater depths of field. Then in post, open the shadows and possibly the mid-tones. Alternatively, make the whole thing soft focus -- yielding of course an altogether different image.

Very nicely presented image of a very not nice looking creature. I'm relieved to be meeting it when it's stuck on a pin rather than in the wild.
When I do focus stacking, I struggle to avoid or to get rid of the "fringing" you mention. Your effort, Neal, seems to my eye to have emerged perfectly.

A completely convincing "botanical" .... from another planet.
Both intriguing and fun.
