Mike, I like your pre-visualisation of throwing three coins in the Trevi Fountain in Rome and using the Pineapple Fountain in Charleston as a worthy substitute for your composition. The overall complementary colours of the bright yellow artificial lighting on the fountain and the dark blue of the clouds works well. It is a pity that the perspective and size of the coins doesn't match the scale of the fountain or the visual story you were creating, particularly the coin that is already in the water. Perhaps what is required here is for the right hand coin to be on the same trajectory as the middle coin but at a smaller scale and just about to drop into the water. I would be inclined to clone out or tone down the bright areas in the bottom left and right corners which are distracting and draw the eye away from the main subject. |

Hazel, This is a lovely image and it is one that has that 'Ah' factor that will undoubtedly be admired by children and grannies alike. You have caught the moment perfectly and there is good eye contact with you. The expression on the kittens' faces is priceless. I agree with Mike about reducing the number of catchlights to only one. The gradation from the sharpness of the eyes and whiskers into the soft-focus background is perfect which adds a sense of artistic mystery. The addition of the yellow and white flowers is a master-stroke and the latter around the kittens creates the illusion of dew drops. Congratulations and very well done. |

Steve, This is a true labour of love. You have produced an image that is not only creative but also has immediate impact. The colour palette across the whole picture is good and the circular/rotational effect that you have produced, draws me in and holds me in. I am particularly drawn to the clump of mushrooms at the bottom right of the tree and for me, that is where the picture is. There is quite a visual contrast between the natural colours of the mushrooms and the saturated almost unreal blotches of colours in the sky. I find that the sky to the left of the tree is well blended with its surroundings but the sky on the right of the tree looks a bit cut out and stuck on. |

Joan, I like the underlying thought-process in this one to create an image that is 'raining cats and dogs'. The background works well and the opacity of the spheres is such that you can see the droplets behind. I would be inclined to swop the bottom two bubbles over such that the dogs are then looking at each other which would be compositionally stronger. Your choice of introducing three bubbles is a good one as this creates a visual triangle of interest. You might like to try separating the bubbles to see how that works. I agree with the others that pear-shaped water droplets would work better than round spheres. Be careful with the shadows not only on the dogs but also the droplets. I would also be inclined to reduce the lighter tones in the droplets to blend more with the background. This is very much work in progress. |
