Janice, I am a photographer who has a reputation for not doing sharp. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that I warm to images that are soft-focus through intentional camera movement where feeling, mood and emotion are much more in evidence and transcend technical correctness. In your image, I don't mind that the horse is breaking the accepted norms by daring to run out of the frame! In fact the opposite and because the horse is on a diagonal with sufficient space in front of him to run into the distance, he encourages me to join him on that journey. I love the way that nothing is sharp and there are swathes of seemingly moving colour throughout. The muted colour palette provides a perfect theatre backdrop against which the much darker toned horse performs. Well done. |

Phillipa, You have grasped the nettle here and stretched the digital imaging boundaries to create a composite which stretches the imagination. The end result has the feeling of a book cover and it is only when you look closely that you realise that the patterns are various combinations of the coloured image of Telc and the monochrome picture of the corn. I love your view of Telc which is truly beautiful but I find my attention being drawn away by the white shapes in the background. Perhaps they need to be toned down a little. |

Steve, I quite like this image which draws me in because it is different. The treatment you have used has created an artistic, abstract almost surreal version of reality which is visually appealing. In any treatment like this, it is important to stretch the visual boundaries and you have done that here through your use of colour saturation and other digital techniques. Well done. |

Peter, It sounds as though this was a labour of love as it took you at least twelve steps to achieve the end result. It has been an exercise in deconstruction and then reconstruction and I am left with the illusion that this is an artistic impression created by colour pastels. The keynote throughout is one of texture and you have achieved your goal of creating the impression that the dahlia is painted on a wall as there is commonality of texture on both dahlia and wall. I note your response to Phillipa's comment. |

Charles, Your image has obviously been a labour of love where you have applied a technique and then modified it and then modified it again. The end result has worked very well and produced an abstract that is pleasing to the eye. It is particularly appealing as I don't know what I am looking at and for that reason, it draws me in. The colour palette is visually attractive and there is a myriad of shapes, patterns and textures to occupy the attention. I tend to agree with Joan that the dark area bottom left is a little visually jarring. |

Phillipa, I find it quite therapeutic to see beyond the reality of an image to conjure up a visual story in the mind's eye of the viewer. Very much a case of it being greater than the sum of the constituent parts. |

Janice, It never ceases to amaze me how something as simple as scratches and water droplets on a sink can evoke a myriad of visual stories. I attach a cropped image as you suggested and I leave it to you to decide which is the better version. |

Joan, This is such a simple image but it is also so complex at the same time. I always say with any landscape picture that it is like a theatre backdrop waiting for something to happen, waiting for the performers to make their appearance on stage. You have certainly achieved that in this image with the curved skid and the rock being the performers. The mountain range in the background looks cold and craggy, in front of which is the scorched and cracked earth of Death Valley. The overall visual story that I get from your image is that an alien being has arrived from outer space, landed, skidded, put the brakes on and then had second thoughts at the last moment. Congratulations and very well done. |
