Steve, Many thanks for your comments which are much appreciated. I have looked at Nathan Bowen's Street Art and there is one entitled 'Queenstown' which has similarities to the billboard that I photographed in London. In his work generally, he makes good used of the Union Jack and Guards wearing busbies. |

Susan, Thank you for your kind words which are much appreciated. I always find it a comforting bond that the colours are the same in our National flags. I suspect the message 'ARE YOU INSPIRED' was simply one from the artist looking to be personally stroked for his artwork. The three characters seem to work well together, particularly as 'three' is a compositionally strong number which creates a visual triangle of interest. I find the overall dynamic and aesthetic of the image is enhanced by the fact that we cannot see their faces despite the fact that they are all looking towards the viewer. Perhaps the artist wanted to create the illusion that they were guards wearing busbies on sentry duty. |

Sharon, Thank you for your kind words which are much appreciated. I quite like images where there is a blurred distinction between reality and added effect, which makes the viewer enter into a visual dialogue with the image to question what they are looking at. As you point out, the paint running down the billboard is a good example. I am often frustrated when judges say that it looks as though there has been some fiddling and diddling here, when clearly that is not always the case. In some respects, it is a bit like a Giles cartoon; the more you look, the more you see. |
