Amber you are right the image is a bit grainy or noisy if you prefer. I do not know why. I tried with many different settings with Automatic and pre-set ISO, this image was taken with a Lumix SZS I think that it might be a feature of the Panasonic sensors, or maybe the lens. I do not know. If you take a look at the EXIF you see 125 ISO, 1/400 at f/5.4 it shouldn't be that noisy. However the PL DXO suite it seams a little bit netter in correcting the problem. We'll see! Maybe is because I cropped the image a lot .
Thank you guys for the comments, exactly on spot, as you are good photographer and smart viewers. But as Ansel Adams once said: "There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer." Forgive me for the analogy but in many of mine images I strictly follow Ansel Adams. When I'm at that location, normally January/February and March watching the sunset is a rite and believe me every afternoon is different. In the several months I spent there dozen times elbow-to-elbow with photographers of any age and believe me is just about sun-and-ocean nothing else matter. If a gull or pelican falls in an image let it be, but the emotions created by the light/water and colors is only what that matters. The most. |

Welcome Amber, good nightly image. I know well how difficult is taking pictures when you have a scene half nicely lighted up and the other half almost dark. Yes, shooting in HDR helps a lot but personally I do not the phony colors that the HDR produces. You did a good job, and of course you can try with different technics. One is stacking, the other is time-lapse. Try you do not have anything to loose. I try to adjust this image, just a suggestion. I'm experimenting with a new app Photo Lab, and I'm not very confident, yet, with it. Good job. Posted: |

Marge congratulation for your excellent image. Good emotional impact, nice story and intent. Good color harmony, sharp focus and exposure, the only thing I would do is increase the space around the subject. I think that as it is now is a bit too tight. And a little more spark on the light/color balance. Nothing more. |

Kerstin if I could invest some money on your photography I would be happy to do that, you are an excellent investment with steady returns. And I'm jealous of you, definitely I do not have you creating capacity. Not only that but your images are technically excellent. Great job. |

A beautiful image a bit complicated. Good emotional impact, nice story and intent. Technically excellent, sharp focus, shadow, light and color balance. However I took a different approach. And I realize, totally, the difficult of choosing a good composition on the flight. As the image is now I think is a bit unbalanced, with the main subject looking like is running out of the frame.Strong upper part but weak lower part. So I cut the bottom part of the frame and chose a different composition that it should enhance the strong part of the image . You might do not like my choice but I do. Try to enter this image in a competition and see what happens. |

When I open you message Gerry, I almost thought that the bird was flying out of the monitor. Amazing capture. I'm thinking to come visit you one day or the other. Yes Art is right you might like to lighten up the image just move the "shadow" slighter and you should be fine. |
