To my eye I would prefer a sharper image. It's next to impossible to hand hold both camera and flower with much success. I agree with David and would like to see a color image of this subject. I feel the background on this works well. |

They work best when you are shooting at 90 degrees from the sun. They do not work when shooting direct at the sun's direction or 180 degrees away from the sun. |

Thanks, Barbara, for your comments. I usually do not saturate my images and did not saturate the greens in this image.
Our eyes usually never see the true colors due to light reflection or glair off any surface, but not metal. A polarizer, which I use with all my images, will usually improve and reveal the true colors to our eyes. A polarizer will make all surfaces better not just skies. If you put a polarizer on your lens, then as you rotate the polarizer you will witness the changes. It's amazing. The cost will be a stop or so. This is one reason why I always use a tripod but not the only reason. |

I use a tripod on all my shots and for me it's important when doing close-ups to manual focus so not to waste any Depth of field. If you shoot a close-up of a flower on auto focus to manty times the camera will lock in on the near edge of the petal. You lose 50% of the DOF. Members need to know this tip. I also use a reflector called sunlight as the secondary light source. This reflects a little light on the shadow side to open it up and give the image depth. |

Interesting image. Nice detail where needed. Like the composition but not sure I care for the twig that turns back on top. To my eye I would change the angle up or down so not to have two different backgrounds. Nice colors on the twig with the red and green. Good eye to see the image. |

David, what an outstanding image. Beautiful background that complements the flower. Great composition and lighting on the flower. Great detail front to back on the petals and stamens. These stacks are fun. So nice to see you use a tripod. You cannot make stacks of this quality without using a tripod. Most refuse or take the time to go to the next level by using a tripod. Question, do you manual focus when shooting most images? |
