I love the great detail in this image handheld. This was due to the shutter speed 1/1600 sec. Great background really makes the image pop. I'm not sure I would remove the bud; I feel it would hurt the balance of the image. It adds a bit of interest to the image. |

I like the composition of this and how the stem takes me into the image. I really like all the changes Fran made to this. Like how she brought out the detail in the center, this important. I tend to like darker backgrounds; they tend to make the subject come forward and stand out. Like the texture in the petals. |

Some flowers are interesting when they are spent and make great subjects. I really love the original best. Love the colors and the deep yellow glow on the outside petals.
I like the vertical on the main image and your border you used. Nice detail in the petals. I would like to see the rose on a slight diagonal which would improve the composition a bit. |

I'm like you, Melanie I love photographing water lilies. Like you said they are difficult due to their location and trying to get positioned in the right spot to get a good shot.
Yes, you are right a polarizer would make a big difference in this image. All the bright spots on the water drops and water are the reflections of the sky. To my eye these are distractions to my eye. A Nik polarizer in post cannot fix these areas, it cannot fix information that's not there. Nik turned the drops on the petals gray.
I would guess you was using auto focus. When I look at the original image looking at the water drops that are in focus, they are sharp several inches in front of the flower and several petals in depth into the lily. This translates into wasted DOF. The camera locked in on the near petal wasting the DOF on this side of that point. How to fix this, manual focus several petals back, the near petal will be sharp and more of the flower will be sharp.
I know you could not shoot at a different angle, but I would like to see the front of the flower. Water lilies are beautiful with a nice yellow center.
I think I like the original maybe best. Sorry, Melanie if I have been too hard on you. |
