This is a Globe Thistle. This reminds me of fireworks bursting in the air. Like the detail in the flowers on top. I feel you could crop some off the bottom and do some more work on the background on the upper third. |

Nice colors in this image. The flower is sharp with nice textures in the petals. Like the color in the stem and how it curves in from the bottom left. Great natural background, love how it mirrors the pinks of the flower.
I feel you could crop some off the bottom. A polarizer on the lens would eliminate most of the glare off the leaves. Most plants have a waxy leaf surface that causes glare. A polarizer does wonders not only for glare but makes colors better. Nice shot. |

I really love this, Fran. I love how sharp the image is and the water drops is a great bonus. Great colors and I like the background. Like how the flowers are grouped together making a triangle. The lower left flower brings my eye into the image from the lower left corner. Not sure I care for the bud on the left side. Great image. |

You have a great subject here to shoot being the cluster of Phlox flower buds. This cluster has great color and great interest which would attract my eye to this scene and cause to want to stop to shoot. I feel the cluster should fill more of the frame, maybe 80% of the frame and eliminate most of the other parts of the plant. I feel they are a distraction due to their brightness and are not needed in the image. I guess I am saying move in closer and just shoot the cluster. This would give the image more impact which is important in an image. The wow factor.
I also agree with Fran, the main and largest bud in the cluster, located on top is not sharp. You could use a smaller aperture, perhaps f-16 and have a greater DOF. You could also make that bud your focus point using manual focus. If you shot at f-16 however you would have a slower shutter speed and probably should use a tripod or a much larger ISO.
If you moved around to the left, you could have a better angle and eliminate most of the distractions I have mentioned. You have all the right equipment to move in close with your 105 and fill the frame with the cluster. One thing I found doing close-ups, if you think your close enough get closer. I feel your background works and like the frame. I have cropped the image to give you an idea what I am talking about. If you could move to the left, you would eliminate the stem on the left which is still a distracting to my eye. |

I agree with Fran on this. The lighting is harsh due to the full sun light. Full sunlight will cause too much contrast in the lighting. I find it best to shoot on overcast days or use a diffuser to eliminate the contrast on the flower. I like the crop you did on the flower to get in nice close focus on the center to show detail. |

Beautiful cosmos flower with nice soft color. To my eye the lighting is very flat which eliminated depth to the image. I find it best to have one main light and a secondary light source which can be a reflector. Lighting is one of the most challenging things to achieve in an image such as this.
Like your background. |
