John, I am a simple photographer who does minimal editing, thus this picture was shot in a covered building, with available light and little high tech post processing.

I think the black background was achieved with the black slider and the contrast in Lightroom. |

I like the close in crop. If the subject is the chess match then the room context becomes less important to me. It also reduces the stark light from the doorway. |

I agree with Stuart regarding the background, which I would darken slightly as the white blotches are too intense for me. |

A most decisive moment indeed. I think you did a great job capturing it. Is the camera tilted slightly, or is that a true horizon? |

I agree with Stan and Jerry's comments. I like the artistic rendering of the black and white, almost an india ink like drawing but much finer details. I might try a slight increase in the blacks or increase in contrast, since many of the white walls on the sides of buildings tend to be distracting. |
