32 Jan 20 Comment Technically this image is great, but I have to agree with Stephan - I'm just not getting any feeling whatsoever from the model. The pose is good and the curves under the paper on the floor are a little different, but I'm not sure this image would stand strong in competition. Jan 6th
32 Jan 20 Comment I like the B&W version as well. The color version is fun, but the other glittery polishes distract. Elegant Woo Hoo really fits and Larry is right about the bottle caps leading to the woo bottle. Nice job! Jan 6th
32 Jan 20 Comment A steam tractor meet is interesting to me - never knew they existed. This is a nice shot as it give me a sense of place and personality. It feels as though the tractor is in motion due to the steam direction, while the driver looks in the opposite direction. Detail of the eagle on the front is nice too. I agree the red would have been too distracting. Nice image. Jan 6th
32 Jan 20 Comment When sharpening is needed, I go into NIK software and use raw pre-sharpen. It seems to help prevent the halo effect. Of course it always helps to take more time in the set-up in the mindset that your shooting film. That always slows me down.

There are a lot of distractions in this image - I would have probably blurred the group on the right and brought down the white in the overhead lights and (what I'm assuming) is a plate in the front of the image.

32 Jan 20 Comment When we lived in NJ I had these and remember the feel and texture of the petals. Your image practically put the mum back in my hand. Nice texture on the flower head petals. I too am not a fan of the back bloom, and I would also remove the spots on the leaf on the bottom left. Jan 6th
32 Jan 20 Comment Thanks Stephen. I use content aware quite a bit, I tried the clone tool, the patch tool, but nothing worked here. It's probably easy with layers and such, but not for me.

As for the tech data, I used an 18-200mm lens with the focal length at 18mm, ISO at 100, f/11, with exposure at 1/25.

65 Jan 20 Comment Beautiful image. The sharpness and focus is great and the angle you chose to capture the orchid is spot on. If I were to nit pick, I would take out the spots on the bottom left white petal. But that's if I were to nit pick... Jan 23rd

87 Jan 20 Reply Stephen - apologies for the delay in responding. For the milk I use about 1/2 cup to 24oz, but that's an estimate. Whole milk works best as it's thicker. I also use xanthum gum, but I make sure the bottle I mix it in has something inside like a "mixing ball" or even a marble. Shake well, then I put it in the refrigerator overnight. It lasts a long time so if you don't get to the shots the next day, you can wait - up to a week or more.

I clean the dispenser dropper with warm water when I finish and run drops through it to be sure it's clean, but I also rinse it in between if I'm changing colors. I learned quite a bit on youtube from First Man Photography - the most helpful is the video from 11/12/2017. He uses a different system, but some of the information is useful for any system. He was the one who suggested the fridge overnight. The mixing ball was mine and it helps.

87 Jan 20 Comment As a fellow water drop enthusiast this is very nicely done. Instead of the cold, when the hot Florida summer rolls in, I go inside to play with the drops. I use the Pluto trigger and add a little milk to thicken the fluid as I find it easier to capture the collisions when the fluid has a little more viscosity. Beginners luck might have been on your side here - one day you can get the best collisions, other days it's an exercise in patience.

Taking the shot with a purple gel was a great idea and produced a nice result for you. The translucent screen produced a clean background and the center of the collision is tack sharp. Very nice image.
