I agree with you that the stem is needed here. So many times we see flowers (and other objects) that seem to just float in mid-air. For some reason the direction of the light is bothering me but I can't tack down why. Was the light placed in a 4 o'clock position? Maybe because the stem is farther back I expect more shadowing...? I'm just not sure.
That said, I love the rich red color of the carnation along with it's folds, ruffles and contours. The choice of keeping a lower ISO is always advantageous so you can reduce shutter speed. But that means a real relationship with your tripod. I heard Mike Moats tell a story recently that Bill Fortney (professional photographer) was giving a presentation at a photo conference and in his presentation he said, sharpness is spelled T-R-I-P-O-D.

The colors on the feather are rich and interesting. I never would have thought to order this on line, but it's a great idea. I agree that the image is soft on the left side and upper left corner as well.
One of the issues I've found with photo stacking is that there have been times I've missed an important spot on the image and as a result the image was ruined. For this image I think you've done a nice job using a teleconverter - I don't have much patience for them. Having the feather cut off on the left top doesn't bother me all that much, but I would have liked to see more of the top of the feather.
What is distracting to me is the strong shadowing in the upper right due to the brightness of the light. What really stands out as well done if the texture you maintained in the center. Each little feather is sharp and full of the rich purple. |

Hi George. Because my daughter played alto and soprano sax for many years, I've taken quite a few images of saxophones. Abalone keys are beautiful and in order to bring out the richest color and texture, I think they need to be shot on more of an angle, with a lower ISO to reduce noise. The difference between the featured key to the one below it is notable (pun intended).
The blue background peeking through is pleasant and grounds the image. |

I like how this image exhibits depth and that the texture is maintained. It's apparent that the portrait is old. When I first looked at this image it seemed to be a large subject - a full book cover perhaps. There isn't a way to determine that this is a macro image. What's missing is context. Perhaps an edge of the book. As a side note, he doesn't look like a very happy poet... |
