I take a bit of a different perspective regarding this image. To me, it lends itself to self interpretation. If we allow ourselves to be boxed in and need a narrative, it can detract from the emotional charge an image like this can produce. Most of us would not shoot another's static art as Jennifer commented, but would shoot a performance of a ballet. We aren't copying how the ballet has been interpreted but rather the artistic movements of the dancers.
As for the technical composition of the image, I wouldn't change the atmosphere such as the sky light. I would darken the silhouette so the image is very dark and the swim trunks aren't visible.
I like it. |

The one foot stance is great - good capture. I don't think the tail feathers have been over-sharpened, and I wouldn't up the contrast. My nature shots are not what one would call successful, so I appreciate this image. |

I might bring down the whites along the wagon hitch and of course the tree in the center as has been mentioned. But as Jennifer wrote, I too have had this happen. I take a "great" shot only to find there's a distraction that makes me wonder how I missed it. The black to white range is great and like Diana I much prefer the mono version. |

I like Jennifer's version of the image, but personally like the clouds. I actually find the bright white a distraction and think the grayer tone promotes the somber isolated feel of Alcatraz. The stairs are a great subject and have a nice balance between the heavy, medium and light weights of the steel railings. |

thanks Jennifer. I enjoy photo stacking as my bokeh was always hit or miss. I used my 105mm macro lens and a tripod. I leave everything in place and only move the focus spot - I find it much easier to use live view. Drains the battery like crazy, but I can see much better. I did struggle with the two on the left, but without them it looked a little bland. I tried to attach more than 1 image, but can't seem to do it... |

wow 80! I would never have the patience. I used f/8 with a 2.5sec exposure. The f/8 and my 105mm macro lens allows more focus with less slices. This particular quinoa has a lot of variety in color. |

Hi Angela
Yes - this is a lucky shot. I think the colors compliment the image and the background suits the butterfly well. I don't know if this image would do well in competition because the top of the wings seem soft.
The body of the butterfly is sharp to the point where you can count the hairs and the stripes on the antenna is nicely captured. |

Hi Janos
I like the broccoli - the color and also the individual segments that it contains. Maybe you could consider bringing down the exposure a bit as it seems a little bright. I would also clone out the bright white spot on the right that's toward the center.
As for the taste, I steam it. Sometimes with chopped onions, sometimes without, but I always add the butter in the end. |

Hi Elaine
I've been on a bit of a forced hiatus but I'm back.
I really like this image. The droplet is a great capture and the way the the stem sits on the diagonal is well done. I might consider cropping off the stem and droplet on the upper left side as I don't think they add to the image. The other change I would consider is to clone out the white (bat shaped?) marking on the droplet on the front left part of the stem.
The color is rich, and clarity is nice as is the bokeh. Nicely done!

I'm always a fan of these water droplet shots, probably because they've always been a particular challenge for me.
The color you chose is striking and for some reason the shape of the drop reminds me of Corning glass works in Corning NY. They have glass blowing demonstrations and I'm seeing liquid glass at the bottom of the drop. What does bother me is the background. The upper left is a distraction for me as is the left side above the glass circle. Maybe a dark vignette and darkening the light spots? The directional lighting works.
Now that I see yours, I'm inspired to try again... |
