Hi Priscilla: Very nice composition, I know you would have removed that one out of focus flower in the background, but in a conservatory you are not allowed to do that. Nice lighting, the yellow flowers simply glow against that well out of focus dark green background. As a suggestion; I would use my highlights slider and remove some of the bright sheen from that back leaf, as it catches your eye. Good job of seeing. |

Hi Pat: You have a selective focus rendition of the thistle where the front side of the flower is tack sharp, and then the sides of the flower start to run out of focus quickly. The soft green out of focus background supports your subject well. Looks like cloudy day lighting, my favorite for this kind of a subject; no harsh shadows in the picture or distractions in the background. Would try cropping from the top, about 1/3 of the way to the top of the flower. |

Hi Khai, Lisa has diffused and darkened your background which in my opinion helps tremendously. Now the background does not distract from the beautiful white Clematis flower but compliments it. In my opinion the background in the original is too busy, and does not compliment the Clematis flower, in fact a bit distracting. Excellent detail and texture and exposure on the flower. |

Hi Lisa: I too like to prowl around in salvage yards looking for subjects with an interesting composition, and also against a good background; also you have a good background that fits the subject. Very nice warm toned color harmonies with nice composition. I like the fact you have the subject on a very slight diagonal to the right, not perfectly straight up and down. Technical qualities are very well done. |

Hi Karen: Interesting idea; the white dish you placed the dice in blends well with your choice of background. Do not think the lettering on the blue dice is as tack sharp as it could be, especially with your focus stacking. My only real nit is the top of the dish picked up some extra light, a bit distracting. I find it interesting your blue border is just a pinch lighter than the blue dice, they blend well. |

Hi Charles: Simply put, a really well done portrait of a single flower. You did a great job in eliminating all of the clutter in the background so the picture is clean and seamless. I am also pleased you cropped from the bottom of the frame just enough so that green stem does not originate from the corner of the frame, but from the bottom. One of my early photography mentors who was an artist in setting up an artistic and pleasing composition in the viewfinder taught me to avoid having a flower stem originate from a corner of the frame. Dramatic lighting against a very dark green background; from a technical standpoint in my opinion there is nothing more you could have done, just excellent !!
The white border adds that finishing touch.

Hi Lisa: flipping the picture also works well; I looked at it flipped as well and settled on the way it is presented. The main reason is I preferred the dark stem at the right bottom of the frame,it keeps your eye in the picture, kind of a natural barrier. I also thought the diagonal lines in the green leaf at the lower left led you into the scene. It is so subjective !! |
