Hi Pat: Moth flakes and moth balls are used inside of clothes closets to keep moths away. They have a pungent odor. |

Hi Charles: These crystals are very small. I did not crop in from a larger crystal design to obtain this composition; this design on the piece of glass was only about one inch across and photographed as it was. |

Hi Priscilla: A very pleasing flower arrangement. The blue For-Get-Me-Nots painted on the side of the vase blend perfectly with the pale yellow miniature Roses. I think you planned this picture out very carefully, as the background colors blend well with the flowers painted on the vase. The soft window lighting was perfect to capture the mood of your set-up. The larger flower at the left looks just fine to me, and that little bud at the upper right adds an interesting side point. I like the way you have placed the vase biased slightly to the right instead of dead centered in the frame. Great Work !! |

Hi Karen: Really like your double mount of the Queen, quite creative !! I like your planned arrangement and the 4 Ace of Spades at the bottom sets the Queen off well. Very well thought out image !! Great work !! |

Hi Pat: Mushrooms are a favored subject of mine, and you have done well on this grouping. Exposure is spot on and your lighting is lovely. As Khai has suggested a vertical composition may have worked well here. Your choice of f/14 was adequate to cover the mushrooms fairly well with good sharpness; using a smaller f stop like f/22 would have added more sharpness to the mushroom grouping, however your pleasant out of focus background may have become quiet busy with the added depth of field. |

Hi Charles: Certainly nice sharp details in the inner workings of the old pocket watch; the gold lettering adds a very interesting side point, also he various shadings of light gray-brown colors are so very interesting against the gold case. The bluish colors in the central part of the watch blend well with the other colors in the watch. |

Priscilla: Thanks for your interesting and helpful comments on Crystal. These crystal images are fun to attempt, and if you can achieve a nice design with good strong colors you feel some success. I seldom see any crystal photography being done these days, not certain why. |

Hello Khai: Very nice Water Lilly picture placed well in the frame. The lighting is very soft which allows good detail and texture in the petals, also I like the small amount of sky reflection in the water. Am glad you did not use a polarizing filter to completely remove the sky reflections, as that never looks quite right. The out of focus leaves further down in the water add a lot of interest. Good Work. |

Hi Lisa: Excellent image; had I been on the judging panel I would have given it a perfect score. In my opinion this picture is underscored at 23 points. You mention perhaps the judges may not have liked "bugs" so they did not score it well; however that is no excuse. Judges are supposed to put their bias aside and judge the quality of the picture before them. Flowers either wild or hybrids are another subject many judges will not score very high, in my experiences just an average run of the mill bird or animal picture will score better than an excellent flower picture. It should not be this way, but it sometimes is. Your picture is composed so very well and with a perfect background and a very interesting subject. Great Work. |
