6 Jan 24 Comment Hi Jim,
What a fun idea for creating an image and experimenting with your ring light.
I understand this is great for product photography, as it allows for some shadow-free shooting.

The concentric circles makes me thing of Kaminsky's abstract images. I recall that Paul Strand is credited with his abstract work and it's impact on photographic art. I hope you can find that image that you have in memory. Thanks!

Do you think the ring light would work for a set-up that requires back lighting, as that technique works so well when shooting glass? Which Lume cube are you using?

I think the image that you've posted is a fine attempt at a lovely abstract and the perspective of the set of bowls is interesting to me.

The color temperature may be a bit warm, I think, especially on left portion of the image. Because DDG offers us a black canvas for image display it is difficult to see the effect of a crop when an image uses a black background.

6 Jan 24 Comment Hi Doris,

I agree with Karen, and believe these brownies would be delicious! Their arrangement and addition of what appear to be yummy crumbs holds my attention. Thanks for posting this and boosting my mood, today!

Because our canvas on DDG for images is already in black, it is difficult to discern the dimensions of an image shot against a black background.

6 Jan 24 Comment Hi Ruth,
There are so many aspects of this image that appeal to me! I find the soft lighting flattering, the details and arrangement of the oranges interesting, and their soft reflections off the sheet of plexiglass provides the context of a foundation upon which they are resting.

I think this image would also lend itself to a square crop, however the feel would be different (and less abstract) compared to placing the oranges off-center in a large expanse of negative space.

I agree that a more balanced framing is needed, and would need to add a bit to the canvas. I know what you mean by wanting to view the bloom from the other side. As I was walking beneath the trellis the other side wasn't visible and I was actually delighted to see the multitude of blooms. For me the rose with it's buds as a whole comprised the subject, but it is so good to learn how other's interpret this image. Thanks again for sharing your candid response.

6 Jan 24 Comment Hi Karen,
Ah! Given all the snow, wind, and extreme blast of arctic air in the midwest, this is such a welcome image! The colorful garden scene and butterfly remind me of the delights of the warmer months and make me smile. Thanks for posting this.

To my eye, the butterfly is perfectly placed in the frame and the shape and markings of the wings are easily discerned. The softness of the distant blooms and bokeh in the background suggest a painterly feel of the image to me.

The main point of focus, which is tack sharp, seems to be directed toward the legs of the butterfly and also the blooms in the foreground on the far left. I wish that other details of the butterfly and those of the blooms on which it is feeding were more clearly revealed.

To my eye, the detailed textures are fascinating and the play of light creates a sense of depth for me.

I agree that Frank's suggestions further enhance the image.

24 Jan 24 Comment Hi, Yvonne!

The two versions offered are both appealing to me, although they communicate very different things to me. I like Frank's version because seeing some of the foliage provides me with some context and grounds the subject for me. I find Bev's version interesting because the flower appears to be floating. This reinforces the interpretation of "dancing stamen" in the negative space conveying an ethereal feel to the entire image for me.

24 Jan 24 Comment Hi, Fred!
Thanks for posting this image of a lovely gardenia flower I think the fragrance of these flowers is wonderful and they symbolize a sense of peace and purity to me. I think showing the image as a B&W is a great idea because it conveys emotive value to me.

I like Bev's suggestions, however the slightly softer capture is also pleasing to me. I wish the details of the leaves and the highlights created by the light entering from the area above the flower were a bit more visible.

24 Jan 24 Comment Hi, Bev!
This bouquet looks so fresh and lovely to me. Do you possibly know what the red flowers are?

To my eye the image is well balanced and the high level of contrasts are beautifully captured. Thanks for posting this image.

24 Jan 24 Comment Hi, Frank!
Thank for the warm holiday wishes. All the best to you for a happy and healthy 2024.

I've been admiring the lovely, decorative dahlia image which you've shared this month. The camera angle provides an opportunity to study the flower details within the bloom which I find most interesting, and adds a dynamic feel to the image. To my eye the color values of the green foliage complement those of the bloom beautifully and really make it pop. Thank you for sharing this beauty.
