I used Nik Silver Effects Pro 2. It is a free plug-in or stand alone module and part of the Google collection. There are several free tutorials, too. The Nik modules work with the Adobe products that you may be using.
I agree about cloning out the distracting black stuff. I just did this quickly and selected one of the automatic presets but you could improve it with some tweaking of the values. Once you bring your image into the Nik module you can view a thumbnail for the various presets to find a starting point. I think you'll have fun experimenting with it.
Have others used Nik? |

Thank you for describing the steps you used. My attempts at burning the background were not successful. |

Eleanor, I love how you surprise me with your creative and unique perspectives. You spot and capture details that I might overlook. Thank you!
The ripples in the sand and overlay of bold lines of the strong shadows are fascinating to me. Larry's version of a monochrome is a good one, I think. I also gave it a try. See what you think.

Thanks, Fran. I too, went back and forth about cropping out the clothes and zooming in further to highlight the hands. |

I love the idea of this image and the feeling of discovery that it conveys to me...A single mushroom stands tall in the dew-kissed field of grass.
There is a section in the mushroom cap (on the left) that appears blown out where textures are lost and this is distracting to me. |

I agree that the light and shadow play enhance the image for me and the color of the door is pleasing. I too, want to open the door to reveal what is behind it.
To your eye was the door a deeper red? The body of the wreath appears to have a similar color to that of the door although the red of the berries helps me recognize them.
I also noticed the plaster patch when I first pulled up the image but I didn't find it distracting. |

I love the diagonal composition and tack sharp pattern that pulls my eye. The tonality is beautiful to me.
The white block in the lower right corner is distracting to me, however it may add context and make the image less abstract. |

I love the sense of 'alone' that this image conveys and the unusual border is appealing to me. Stuart mentioned the theme of haunted and this one achieves that for me, too. I think you've created an abstract with impact. |

The natural window light in this image is so beautiful to me and the peppers are captured to appear three-dimensional. I think the velvety black background adds to the sense of depth and makes the colors pop for me.
I agree that the stems need to be there and for me, they add to the natural feeling of the image. Also, if the peppers were just picked I don't think snipping them a bit more would enhance their appearance. It may be worthwhile to experiment with some slight rounding to the snipped edges to see if that might enhance their visual appeal.
