There is a Buddhist temple in Houston that displays huge barrels of lotus blossoms each year. The public is welcome to enjoy them. |

I have taken into consideration the comments given. I've redone the lotus with a black background and with a bit of the leaf I liked. Comments? |

This crop is grand. I agree that the tree is important and in this crop it shows it well. |

I smiled when I read your critique, Sharon. I have been with this group long enough that when I think about what I might do, I hear John's asking me what is the star of the image? Mike often suggests vignettes. You like a square crop and dark background for a flower. I almost used that idea except that I like the curve of the leaves on the side of the flower and wasn't sure if black would be the answer. But I'm open to all critiques and will try all suggestions to see how they work. I plan to use this for a competition so appreciate all ideas. |

This can go two ways. I like the face and foreground leaves. They are wonderfully sharp, clear, and interesting. I am a bit amused at how much the vegetation lends to the image. What bothers me are the white body parts which seem blown out and distracting. Your head does not seem attached to the body
I am bothered by the blown-out body which captures my focus longer than it should. Then I look at it again and the wonderfully sharp foreground pops more because the background is so white.
I'm not sure if you purposely shot it this way. However, it is a diversion from shots you usually take.
I suggest you remove the gray branch and smudge next to it, beginning just about the 2021 date.

I like the angle of your shot. You have good subject matter. I would suggest dodging and burning the eye. Darkening the black and making the white brighter will draw attention to it. As for the color I would suggest whatever Mike said because he is an experienced birder. |

Your crop brings our attention exactly where it should be. You have done an admirable job of changing the exposure so the bats are easy to see and enjoy. The bats' eyes have good catch light. I suggest dodging the whites in them to bring out that catchlight. I think the image would be improved if you isolated the bats on their branches and raised their exposure only slightly using a levels layer. |

Isn't it fun when you find this experience? I like the odd number of birds and like the strong sense of movement. I think your sky could use a boost. I suggest, perhaps, isolating the sky and adding a cool photo filter as another way of addressing the sky. |

I like the fall palette and textures in your image. My eye travels around the image in a circular pattern.
The dark brown water is a distraction for me. I think a crop from the bottom would still include some of the water but give more focus to the textures of your image.

I see what you are saying and will work with that idea. |

Excuse me, Sharon. I meant the left foreground in reference to the grasses. I think that area is given too much focus because of the color of the grasses. |

The composition strikes me first. I like that the lower branches take me into the foreground, and the upper branches take me into the background and sky. The sky is dramatic as the clouds roll across. In my opinion you have added too much orange to the image. I prefer the original colors of the foreground. My eye is drawn to the dead grasses in the lower right because of this. The best process is possibly somewhere in the middle. |
