Thank you for your detailed feedback. My bland, gradient fill landscapes are in keeping with landscapes many surrealist painters of the 20th Century used in their paintings. It's a way to highlight the surrealism, I guess. There are 2 contemporary surrealist artists whose work I follow. One uses plain backgrounds, and one uses very detailed backgrounds. As for blurring the background, I blurred the deep background as you suggested, but I feel having the whole background in focus adds to the surrealism. What you refer to as the mask, I see as a piece of the face of a larger sculpture. You have triggered a good discussion, just what this Digital Dialogue is meant to do. |

Fran, welcome to Group 34. When buying eggs, I always inspect each egg to make sure none of them is cracked. I must admit, It never occurred to me that I would find a butterfly in the egg carton. Your composite illustrates your imagination beautifully. I look forward to seeing more of your imaginative composites. |

Georgianne, I revised my composite a little per some of your suggestions. I darkened the sculpture and the observer, and I removed some rocks in the lower right hand corner that I thought might be distracting. The landscape IS desolate so we'll have to agree to disagree about the rest. Thank you for your observations. |

It's hard to believe that such a lovely image was produced by a devotee of Goth. Your colors, textures, and shapes all combine to make the flowers jump off the screen. Nice work. |

I don't quite understand exactly what you did, but that's not a reflection of what you wrote, nor does it detract from the quality of this image. In the 1960's there was a movement in the art world called "Op Art." The images in this movement were painted by hand! Of course, they didn't know about digital cameras. This is a fine example of op art. Your work on producing this image paid off well. |

You've given this cow a lot of personality which almost makes me want to become a vegetarian. Your work as paid off well. The only thing that detracts from the image are the textures you have added that makes the cow look like she's part zebra. I feel she would look even more adorable without the stripes. Nice job. |

Aerial Menagerie reminds me a bit of the movie poster for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (I make a lot of references to movies because I taught an honors film class at my high school. It's ingrained.) The car and its passengers are adorable, and the colors of the sky are a good fit for this image. Yes, there's a . . . however, this composite is not as satisfying for me as your "Traveling Snailsman" (June 2019), "Take Me Away" (November 2019), or "Getting Away from It All" (December 2019). The latter 3 are a bit more "finished," for lack of a better word. In addition, they are more imaginative. I feel you need to take this another step. |

I just read your PID bio and saw that you live in SC. I was born and raised in Anderson SC, as far away from you as you can get and still be in SC. The only time I've been back is when my wife and I drive on I-95 from NJ to Sanibel Island. |

I have a subscription to Phlearn but haven't searched the site for Luminance. Thanks for the heads up. I use all the help I can get. |

Thank you. I use Detail Extractor a lot, and High Key sparingly. I'll revisit it soon. I'll also investigate Darken/Lighten. I have seen others' "About the Images" comments who have used Luminance, but I was unable to find it, even with Google's help. I found it under Color Mixer as you said. Thank you again for the road map. I'm sure to have fun soon. |

Sylvia, I really like the HDR effect you achieved with Nik Color Efex. Can you describe which filters you used to get such a delightful photo? |

Thank you for your kind words. You have a good eye. You're the only one who has mentioned the movement of the street lamp. Photoshop makes it all possible. |

To be mentioned in the same sentence with Edward Hopper and Magritte makes my day. Thank you. Less IS more. :) |

Creating mermaids is certainly not easy and you've done a wonderful job. In the image with the rock, I find that the rock in the lower right hand corner creates a bottom for the image, almost a frame. It works well. I find fog difficult to work with and try to avoid it. I have some fog brushes that make it easier, but I still find it challenging. I guess that's why I like the image without the fog better. This image certainly makes a "Splash." |

Your snake is certainly a species all its own. Your treatment of the eye is quite successful, and your use of Linear Burn works so well I'm going to see if I can find a use for it. The sky works well here, but I find the greenery a bit distracting from your creation of a new species. Nice work. |

This is another lovely, well executed flower. It is so well done that one does not mind that the flower is gray! The great egret in the lower left hand corner is beautiful. I photograph them as frequently as I can. Personally, I would prefer that this egret be the only one in the composite and flying into the image. Wishing you continued success reimaging flowers. |

To answer your question, I find the boat less distracting than the part of the anatomy that is peaking out from behind the umbrella. The bright yellow umbrella certainly attracts the eye and the beach scene is refreshing and inviting, but for my taste a naked bottom is too much of a distraction. |
