Mike - I had spent a year with a small (15 - 20 active) local club focusing on nature entering a couple of state (WI) area competitions that included several subjects. Then I wanted to try a variety of subjects (digital and print, color, mono, nature and photo journalism) and went to a larger club (25 - 40 active) that also had monthly meetings with technical subjects. Then also joined state PSA for more exhibition chances and got to judge a PSA competition. At same time I was getting entry guidance and tips from a PSA club member who actively did PSA exhibitions (probably the best resource and experience).
Just some thoughts. Takes time to accumulated the needed PSA acceptances but possible - especially with what covid did to mtgs and reduction of clubs sponsoring PSA and local photo competitions.
One thought, get plenty of critiques from a variety of people and if PSA recognitions are a goal make sure to focus on people who actively participate in PSA.

Like the shot Cindy and minimalist comment. Also like the differing exposure and picture depth. Were you shooting with a macro? |

I'd have to see the cropping idea. It may work if your shooting for the abstract impression or loss too much content. Has potential. How you doing in PSA competitions? |

Thanks for both comments for exploration next year. Bottom line keep your background in mind when shooting. Usually I shoot "sports" style (hand held).
Also I usually can shoot milkweed more straight on versus top (Aster) and birds-eye. Therefore I'm going to explore both your suggestions plus picking a different angle, using tubes and or a macro.
Oh consensus of a couple of local flower clubs and a national bird group is the flower last month was an Aster (per Wiki 33"-39") which can greatly help if a macro/tubes is handy with a mirrorless camera and tripod. Thanks again. |
