For the mono, I like the 09/03/2018 14:25:13 version. While the color version is OK, the color in the stump tends to minimize the color for me. Ever considered the stump in mono and the saw in color? Oh, square image.
Regardless, an interesting shot of contrasts. |

Also I would love to visit England, especially during the popular rally season where the opportunities of people without helmets running past colorful flowers or fall leaves are great. You should give it a try. If you haven't done a lot a panning, check some "how to" websites. In the beginning of the season I am using 1/250 and work my way down to 120 towards end of season. For rallys and associated speed your goal should be 1/60 and lowest f stop.

I think I would like clear and crisp elements. Blurs too much for me. |

Youth.
I'm thinking the large open space on the left would work better on the color version. On the B&W I would consider some cropping but the in-balance has some merit (probably not in PSA Competitions).
What might be interesting is to print both (mirror one) and hang close to each other.

I like the suggestion of cropping at the right. I also like Jeff's suggested modifications.
With those modifications, I still lean towards the color which reminds me of Ireland with the fog/mist and green landscape.
I like both versions.

I have to vote with Paul on color because of the flame from exhaust. The white puff doesn't attract my eye as the flame would. This being the first opportunity for this event at RA I'd like to see whether there is wheel spin during the jump (sometimes not) or you can get blurred trees with panning. I'd also suggest you trying blurring background and more crop to isolate on the truck. I like your crisp undercarriage detail. Not sure where action occurred but trust you did a lot of searching for acceptable background. |

Agree with Gerry and Stephan's comments, I like the shot Bob. Seeing the rider looking off course is also unique. Not sure about Gerry's "DQ'd" comment if this was entered in PJ Open where sports are allowed.

I would score high given composition (surfer vertical with board horiz), board contact one place (hand) and otherwise the board and surfer are separate. I also like the crisp surfer, board and strap detail, water droplets and hair action. Definitely illustrating freedom of surfers from gravity (earth surface).
Only possible problem area could be the face. You have the experience with surfing action pics and scoring in the various contests which I don't. I also know you like to focus on the face with kayaking through rapids - similar judging expectation?
You also know the exhibitions where surfing is well regarded so, while I think this is one of your better ones, I hesitate predicting the International judges.

Agree with Gerry where the sunlite players and crowds in the shadows focuses attention on the players. I also like the shot especially the realism (slight shirt tug) and player focus on the ball.
I also agree with Gerry's hot spot and sign adjustment.
Great shot. |

Nice shot. Suggest you crop a little to focus on player, one version from belt up and one full height. One problem you will run into is many judges want to see the ball in flight. One improvement I'd suggest is to clone out the light spots behind the pitcher and try moving to your right slightly so you can eliminate the signs.
I have tried baseball but should. Lot of potential near me with Concordia Chinooks and semi-pro Timber Rattlers. |

Jeff Klug and I have had Calif exhibition "screeners" say no to a number of "person" shots like this in other similar contestent situations. My judgement is should be good. Only suggestions are to check with Gerry E on how he would judge it or just submit and let them say no. it should be at least PJ Open.
You might be marked down for brim hiding the eyes. Other than that I like the shot. I've only got to one rodeo and didn't get a good head shot. I do like your idea of the rider focus.
Good luck. |
