56 Jul 19 Comment While the arches in the building are interesting-looking, you did right in leaving them out to focus in more closely on these cute characters. And I agree that your simplification of the shirt was an enhancement, although I do like plaid in general. So now it's not too busy. I like the colors, paint strokes, and the position of the subjects very much. Nice work, Elinor! Grab-shots are great and you made the most of this one. Jul 16th
56 Jul 19 Comment Gerhard, this sure is a departure from your "usual" wild animals. Too bad the original shot wasn't available, as that might have kept the sky from getting sort of over-sharpened with the added painting techniques. I think the first shot had a sufficiently darker foreground of vegetation to give the depth Terry mentioned above.

You found a very interesting rock formation and have the waves hitting just right to show it off. I can almost feel the spray and hear the sounds of the sea while I gaze on this impressive painting of yours.

56 Jul 19 Comment What a lovely, peaceful scene. It looks similar to some Japanese gardens I've seen (in this country). Since all the foliage is so soft, I wonder if it might look better to blur the rather distinct tree trunks at the top into the sky even more, since that brighter area is where my eye keeps going. Or, perhaps clone some of those green bushes from top right into that area. Jul 16th
56 Jul 19 Comment I like everything about this shot, Terry, especially the closer crop that helped focus on the blacksmith. I found out I had some blacksmiths as ancestors, so it's nice to see one at work.
The yellowish coloration gives a feeling of how intolerably hot it must have been, doing that work. Also was fortuitous to have a hint of some of his tools in the upper left. I like his cap better in the final painting, as it just looks like a bandana in the original. Also, the flames, and his beard and hair look less scraggly and more painterly now. Glad to have you in our group.

56 Jul 19 Reply Thank you, Terry. Welcome to our group! I'm looking forward to seeing your work each month. Jul 16th
56 Jul 19 Reply Yup, you fixed it. Of course I don't mind. Thanks, Oliver for taking the time to show me an illustration of what you meant. It was a nice surprise to find a comment from a visitor to our group! Jul 16th
56 Jul 19 Reply Elinor, thanks for your thoughtful suggestions. I guess I'll do some more work on it before I try printing it. Jul 16th
56 Jul 19 Reply Cyril, I think that the dots came with the Line and Ink filter which I used to recover the detail that Buz Sim had left looking blank (all the windows had disappeared). If I enlarge this for a print, I might spend some time finding another way to reduce the pointillism effect, because you're right; it does look odd close-up. Jul 16th

86 Jul 19 Comment Hey, Janet, what a great grab shot! Carl's comment about making an ad for gin cracked me up. And I agree that the only elements in the shot certainly lined up to lead the eye to the unexpected bartender, who is nicely sharp. I feel like I got to see something unique, looking at your shot. 86 Jul 19 Comment This was one of my favorites this month, Margaret. My first impression was looking down the netting of a basketball hoop, especially with that title. It's just so unusual and the added blue color makes it even more interesting. Once you got all the background out of the way, I see the creative imagination runs free, judging from other peoples' comments of what it appears to be. You must have had fun with this one. Jul 16th
86 Jul 19 Comment We are starting to see these in Tennessee, but I hadn't thought of them as cute, just as roadkill. I guess their lack of the 5 senses helps explain that. When they get to our backyard, I'm going to be shocked. Of course, they just captured an alligator in the lagoon across the street from where I once worked in Chicago. So you never know.

You had a good idea to flip them, Ruth, and the sharpening made them more distinct from their background. I think you made the most of your shot. Nice job.

86 Jul 19 Comment Thanks for sharing the names (plus a sample) of some other apps to try, Laurie. I like the way the edits you made on the original really made the little fellow POP out in the final image, when he had appeared to blend more into the dim background originally. I sure like all the detail in the snail. Jul 16th
86 Jul 19 Comment I liked your last word, "whew!", Belinda. You did a lot of edits and moreover, actually remembered what you did. That in itself is an accomplishment.

What I liked the most about your final monochrome image is that you let all the distracting parts of the background drop off into dark shadows and intensified the interest in the center of the flower with another shadowy area at the core. It all has a 3-dimensional appearance with the sharp details of stamens and pistil and of the texture in the petals contrasting with the softening look of the petal tips.

86 Jul 19 Comment My first thought was "I wonder what filter he used to add those realistic-looking scratches to the window panes?" I think the shot was fantastic and I can't imagine changing a thing, Carl!

By the way, we always enjoyed Port Washington ever since we attended a Wash Away Worries Weekend at the local hotel in February and ate at Smith Brothers restaurant (probably long gone). I was scared to death walking along that icy breakwater in my moonboots (which shows you how long ago it was.) Thanks for the memory.

86 Jul 19 Comment Before I get around to making a print of this (someday), I appreciate your helpful suggestions of some things I can still do to improve the image. With these guidelines from fresh eyes, I would have no problem lopping off some building on the left or straightening out the right spire up to its middle.

Salt Lake City was a good spot for a conference and I'm looking forward to seeing Spokane this fall. Will any of you be in attendance? If so, I'll look you up. Would be nice to meet in person.
