He's a wonderful model and you did so well preserving his aged look in your painting, Kathy. My only nitpick is that the look of the pupils of his eyes appeared better to me in your original shot. After using Impressions, they seem dark and rather blank. |

I agree that I like the way you added a suggestion of clouds into the plain sky with a pointillistic look to the entire painting, in a departure from your accustomed subject matter of wild animals. The line of the driveway leads us right into the farm. Glad you were able to keep the original colors intact in your painting; the patches of flowers look so natural. |

Now that you mention it, I think removing those short branches would make a better painting, Nancy. I was thinking a few more dark branches would look better just behind and below the bird, in the lower left corner, if you could only move them or create a few more branches. I sure like this heron and the painterly way you stroked its feathers. The added moonlike overlapping dots were a thoughtful addition.
Thanks for the embedded lesson on mixer brush/blender. I wish I wasn't so dense about using it myself. Maybe I can study this over and finally figure it out. |

Your out-West images just keep getting more interesting, Cyril. Although he's smack-dab in the middle of the shot, I don't see how you could have changed the composition without losing part of the fascinating red rock formations and snowy tracks. I only see one distraction: the dark shadows or puddles or (cracks in ice?) at lower left that call my attention and make me wonder what is being shadowed or cracked in an otherwise peaceful scene. It may have really been there, but I don't think you need to keep it in the painting. I notice the sky has some strokes in the painting, but I don't detect many other changes as you created the painting. As you said, you kept it realistic this time. |

Elinor, yours succeeded in being one of the most painterly of our images this month, very believable as an original painting. I like both the original and the painting! Maybe if you cropped the final one very tightly, you could have the 3 flowers fill the inner space like the original did with its too-bountiful bouquet. Fantastic primary colors. Glad you kept them the same. |

Welcome to the group, Lisette! My first impression is of some innocent bystanders getting socked with the start of a tidal wave, such as the kind we have seen in the news. The murky-muddiness of the air on the left and the crashing of the waves you added also contributed to that feeling. You've transformed a peaceful beach scene with pretty clouds to an ominous or mysterious wild mood. |

That spinning blur does look cool. And thanks for the recommendation for SuperPhoto. I'll have a look at it. |

Yes, you DID enhance the photo with the bokeh bubbly look! Do you recall how you got that look? By coincidence, this month a member of my other group (56) posted a bird with similar round dots, (but larger ones) using something I don't have in Photoshop, called Topaz Texture, I believe. I like how one larger dot features the dance partner's face and wonder if you have control to arrange the dots? If you still have the "spin blur" image you liked the most, I'd love to see that, too! Thanks for illustrating your enhancements, Carl. |

At Carl's recommendation, I downloaded the TouchRetouch app, so now I just need something to try it on. I was very impressed with what it did on the eyeglasses reflections. I notice that even the hot spots on the can are burned down better.
Ruth, your selfie was very timely as a way to start the New Year and begin our new group 86. You did a good job of getting the whole can in the image while managing to look pleasant and happy, yourself.
We follow my husband's Cuban custom of eating 12 grapes in rapid succession at midnight as our New Year's tradition. (Now that we live in the mid-South, I keep hearing about the Black-eyed peas. Good deal, I've always loved them, even when they were harder to find, up north.) |

I remember when the King Tut exhibit came to Chicago, years ago. It was hugely popular. I wish I'd been into photography then. Laurie, you were right to remove the purplish cast, as the sandstone color looks more attractive and natural, showing off the details very well. |

Cyclamens have always been a favorite of mine, but I've never had success growing them. I never would have thought of trying a grunge filter on one. Kudos for a creative look, Belinda. |

It certainly was the right time to catch the scene when it was light out, yet free of action. It has sort of a vintage, timeless look. If you really wanted to make it look as though it's out of the past, you could just clone out that antenna. While not distracting per se, it's a slightly jarring element. The trees don't bother me. I love the angles and the sharpness of focus for the signage. You did quite a lot to it, yet left it beautiful in its simplicity, Carl. |

I agree that it would have been so much better with a sharper shot to start with. (Others I attempted to take that evening were blurrier. I wouldn't dare use flash at a live performance, even if it would freeze action.)
I used the iPhone X and I haven't found any option for Motion Autofocus. When I tap a face, I can get it to focus for just that split second or let me brighten/darken the scene, but I think that's it. I will look at Snapseed to see whether I can do some cropping. I joined the group to learn how to improve phone shots, so I appreciate all the suggestions. |
