Kudos Mike for such a great capture in the wild so to speak. I have only photographed hummingbirds by "cheating" with flash setups. Beautiful light on the bird and great catchlight in the eye. Great wing position also. I won't ask how many images you took to get this winner. I agree with Sharon about taking the highlight spots out of the flower petals. |

I like the red leaf version the best. To me the image looks a little soft. A shutter speed of 1/15 sec, if not on a tripod, makes it pretty difficult to get a sharp image. I agree with Sharon on simplifying the image. The leaf is your main subject so for me I would put it front and center so the eye lands on it and stays there. Because there is so much space in the image my eye wants to wander around to see what else I can find. |

Pied-billed grebes are fun little birds to photograph. The soft low light was very effective in highlighting the grebe's face and neck. I like the reflections in the water and the rings going out from the bird. I agree with Sharon about taking out the other three reeds and the little stick behind the bird. It might be just an allusion but to me the image looks to be leaning to the right. It could be the way the bird is positioned but you might try a slight straightening to see what it looks like. Well done. |

Kudo's to you for looking for and capturing the often overlooked birds when on safari in a big game park. I think you did an excellent job in capturing this bird. Everything looks nice and sharp. There is a sense of the environment without distracting elements. Some would suggest to flip the image so the bird is looking to the right because that is the way we read, left to right, but I feel it is a matter of preference. Well done. |

Thank you for your comments. I will look more closely at the rock you mentioned. |

I can't pass up a GBH either. I like how you cropped this into a square that removed the distractions yet still giving the heron room to move to the right. I think you captured the right moment of flight takeoff giving the wings a beautiful position. The head appears sharp. I think you have done a nice job in muting the background. I think my only suggestion would be to desaturate the green in the background just in front of the feet. |
