Very nicely done, Martin, in what could have been a busy scene. I like the way the smoke works with the cloudscape, and the mimicry of the distant smoke, it all comes together so well. The bonus is the foreground water, adding another interesting diagonal to the scene. Nice job on the lighting work done post.
I wonder if one of your colleagues will suggest a horizontal flip. It would produce the left to right flow of smoke, though I find the maker usually prefers the original orientation. |

What I like about images like this is, how the photographer doesn't just capture the composition, but actually makes the composition. I very much like the way you've placed the blueberries, and the lighting and color is excellent as well. |

Very nice, Barbara, but I also sensed something amiss with the color...not sure if it's over-saturation of the red, but I was thinking it was a color cast, too warm. |

This is just excellent, Gregory. Filters such as the ones you've used are often used to uninspiring effect, but here, your choice and execution takes the image to another level, adding to an already compelling composition, with the use of silhouette rendering the image all the more effective. |

What caught my attention was the lean, or angle of the clouds mimicking the angle of the sand, and the grass. You've got a beautiful cloudscape with an approaching storm. The bonus is the second clump of grass in the distance. Very nice, Barbara. |

It's ok that he's so small, because the background is just so beautiful and engaging. I think I've taken dozens of attempts at a shot like this, and never found a background so nice. |

Gary, you can be counted upon for always showing something interesting and provocative.
This is an image that I love on first sight, or as a thumbnail, but then less so as I dig down into it, mainly because I'm not a big fan of painterly effect filters, as I've seen so few images be able to pull it off well, more often, as in this case, they detract from an image that can stand on its own.
While I see where Charles' is coming from, for me, the starburst effect works here, actually makes the image for me. It feels like a nativity scene. They also direct me to what seem to be subtle curves in the barn, not straight lines, which is odd, and compelling. The angle of these bending lines is complimented perfectly by the fence rail at the bottom. Also, great job on turning the busy-ness of the twiggy trees into something controlled and interesting.
Unfortunately I can't add anything on software, as I'm also looking for something new, as I still use Aperture, but will lose it with my next computer or system upgrade, so I'm in the same boat in a way I suppose.
Thanks for sharing this Gary. |

Thanks Gary, I agree it's better without the toning, and the darker sky is more Ansel-esque. For me, the cloud becomes too prominent however... thanks for the reminder I will have a look at your image for this month. |

Thank you Palli, I agree, I think at least a bit of edge burning on the bottom would help. |

Very nice Emil, it's a very pretty spot. And the in color, the trees form a better border, not distracting. |

Seeing the clouds through the windows makes this very compelling, Emil, and the foreground shadows are also very nice. I didn't pick up on the fact you'd added the clouds until reading your description. However, there is a certain surreal feeling evoked, and I think it's because, normally it'd be very difficult to get detail in both the sky and the building, because we are looking into a very bright sky; an HDR effect. I would be interested in seeing this shot with a natural clouds and sky too. Do you shoot any closeups of just the building without the trees bordering? |

I think you've composed this scene very well, Palli, and the result is very pleasing. The two trees leaning in opposite directions, the bridge, the river, and the road with dashed line all come together so well.
Interestingly, before reading your caption, I was thinking, this is one of those infrareds that evoke snow, so you were successful in that goal as well. I would like to see this scene after a heavy snowfall. |

It's a beautiful landscape, Charles, but to me it feels a little underexposed. I get that you were after the black sky, and I agree that works well. But I like the exposure of the bottom half, better in the original version. I think the reflection would pop more, and we'd get some detail in the scrub beyond that, if brightened a bit. Just a thought ;)
It piques my interest in wanting to visit this area some day! |

It's an interesting and original take on a colorful flower, Arik. The softness of the background lends to a sense of mood.
Because there is so little detail in the background, however, there is also very little sense of depth, so I really don't have that "flower in a field" feel, if that's what you were after, but rather more of a flower on a canvas, more 2D. For me, I find that cropping down about 1/4 or 1/3, to the top of two darker seed heads, remedies this, and gives me the depth that I was looking for, and becomes very enjoyable. |

I've never been, looks interesting!
I like the high contrast treatment, Melanie, even though you have the white leaves, the tree trunks are black. There's a very gritty feel to it. I especially like the detached tire!
I like the way the tilt works on the car in the original...I might have corrected it just a bit less, to where it wasn't noticeable on the trees, but still a little bit on the car. In other words, I think you overcorrected it just a tad, but that's a nitpick. |

Thank you, Emil, I agree and had already bumped the white up a bit in the clouds, but will try a little more. |

Never having seen a cotton field up close, Lamar, I particularly enjoy this, the limited color palette, the beautiful sky, it's whimsical and engaging. I think it would work in black and white also. |

I've often seen scenes where there's not much else than a beautiful sky, and how to approach?
I like that you have a foreground that is uniform and not distracting. I also like the crop suggestions the others offered. The deep blue hues and puffy clouds evoke a sense of mood we can all identify with. |

I think as camera phones get better and better, Gene, the handiness of them will continue to make them a more compelling alternative to SLR and DSLR cameras.
Like you, I'm a fairly new member of group 86 and have been showing some of my favorite iPhone shots over the years...thanks for the kind comments |

You're right, Pat, it was really scary being out there alone while this thunderstorm passed over, no where to hide! And then after, on the walk back, I was presented with his treat. |

I like this, Gene, and would agree with and second Kieu-Hanh s comments, especially about the shrubbery upper fight.
In addition to the simplicity, the graphical qualities, I also really like the cracks in the concrete. Sometimes the "not for a show" images are the most interesting. Good job on presenting a compelling image out of an everyday scene! |

This displays that advantage of phone cameras, that when you see something interesting, you can take a quick picture. I think cats are great subjects, and this one makes for a nice story image; one could read a variety of emotions into that gaze! The only thing that detracts is that pillar right behind him. I suppose one could clone some foliage on to it to make it less noticeable. |

Thanks, Kieu-Hanh. I think you're asking if I used the pano feature where you pan the camera? Those are fun, but in this case, no, it was just a regular shot, and I cropped the bottom part off. |

This is quite an impressive macro, Belinda, for being a phone camera shot! I think my favorite is the "Original 2" (the extra image) because it's a little more from the side, we can see more of him in focus, and he has such a beautiful pattern.
In your edit you have much shallower, DOF, more of a traditional macro, so I'm guessing you were closer to your subject. This one works well too. It makes me want to try one of those little macro lenses they make for phones, see what kind of bokeh one could get. |
