I like it, Shirley. Unfortunately, whether it was the camera, or it looks like it was taken as a jpg, it falls short technically. But it's a beautiful simple composition, and I wanted to congratulate you on that. |

A good example of how nice light makes a compelling image out of almost any scene. I enjoyed this very much, Paul. |

I've seen and taken this scene, Michael, in the spring, and enjoyed seeing the rich golden brown hues and the textures you've presented here, very nice! |

I like this scene, and love this sky, Jen, but my immediate reaction was, I want to punch it up a bit. See if you like my edit, but if you prefer softer, that's fine too. Sunflowers are so colorful, you don't often see them in black and white (though I've done it too!) and I think they do work because of the repeating patterns they provide. Very nice. |

You've got some nice directed light on the egret, Don, so I think it works well. He has a majestic pose, and you've got great detail in the feathers, so I'd say, well done. |

I think it's a beautiful presentation of textures, curves and shapes, Adrian; just the kind of image that shines in black and white. I like the symmetry, and find so much to enjoy as I look around the image. It's interesting how the color tones in your original, converted to the same tone in black and white. That actually helps the image for me, as in the original I find the color contrast distracting.
It looks like this is the original crop, and that at the top of the image a border or a railing of some sort that runs right along the edge, which detracts. As you can't get any wider unless you have other shots, your only option, if you agreed, would be to crop down below that.
Otherwise, I think you have done an excellent job. |

You've got a nice background, here, Ed, for your subject, but since your aim was to present the textures of the lichen plant, I think better sharpness was necessary. Shallow DOF and blur can sometimes work well in macros, when they serve to focus our attention on the center of a flower, etc. Foreground blur, as you have here, is particularly difficult to work with. For a sense of distance, I think you'd want the area closest to the camera sharp, and then it blurs as it gets further away.
As you probably know, standing a little further away, or using a smaller aperture (higher f stop), helps in this regard. The serious macro people (not me) might even resort to a focus stack (multiple images at different focal points) to get everything sharp.
All that said, I'm a fan of lichen myself, and can get a feel for what you were after here, and appreciate your sharing it. |

Very well done, John, it gives a true and moody rendition of what this area is like. I like the way the trees are arranged, there are no distracting elements, and despite the foggy day, you've captured some nice tonalities. Overall, it presents a great sense of place. |

Lovely silver tones, Gary, and the sky compliments so well. It's nicely composed and I think Emil's comment improves. |

Thanks, John, it's the 830 nm conversion.
Good point about the lack of sharpness throughout (and Charles comment about the toy shovel also). Being hand held in such low light necessitated a very shallow dof, which resulted in such a narrow zone of sharpness. |

Very nice, Emil. I love the use of lines and patterns in images, especially when do so well and with simplicity as you have here. The silver tones are also very nice, and seems to be your style, but I agree the sky does benefit with a bit of darkening.
And as you said on Charles' image, great social distancing! ;) |

I like the old tree, Palli. I have conflicting feelings on the filter. I like the texture it adds to the body of the image; the frame, sure it's a cool effect, but I think overall it takes away from the simplicity of your image (but I'm a purist in that regard ;) . What I like about the tree is it's long arching branch on the left, and in your crop, you've lost that. For me, all your image needs is a sky like Gary has this month. Nice though just the same. |

Lovely scene, Gary! Lucky you!
I love what you've done with it, but I think I could live without the blur. Emil's point about the darkness is well taken, but I think at the very least, the dark sky is ok, maybe the rest of the image could be a little closer to the original. Either way, I find it enjoyable, and well composed, with the placement of the two trees. The blowing grass is a bonus and I can just feel the wind swept day. |

You do a nice job of selective colorization, Charles, and I like the way the blue in the sky plays off the blue in the pool water. Good comments from the others about the cropping. Yes, it has a nice mood to it. |

Welcome, John! Glad you finally made it in. This is a great group.
On your image, I might have cropped in a little closer, as the interest is in the gazebo, for me, and the foreground water. The trees have some nice silver tonalities, but I think as you shoot more in infrared, you'll find you get used to the light leaves effect, and find ways compositionally to make an image interesting.
Good use of overcast light, and I also like the cool tones. |

I found the people walking toward me so naturally to be the highlight of the image, Melanie, as Gary alludes to. I keep looking down at their feet; they're only a step away from being just standing there, which would be static, ordinary. What a difference such a detail makes.
It's interesting that you chose to take a photo journalism or travel image in infrared. I have also found that IR comes to the rescue in midday light. Just a nitpick, the processing in the sky seems a little uneven, as in lighter blotches. Very nicely done overall. |
