Guy, my first impression when I looked at the image was that the candles needed some straightening, which Erik took care of it. I like the different types of surfaces on the same image, which makes you study the whole picture. Very strong shadows that gives the tridimensionality to it. Very sharp.
Glad that you are back and around |

Erik, I had to consult Dr. DuckDuckGo to find out what "reducing the cant" means. I just learned a new (old) Gaelic-Latin expression. Thanks |

Bill, this is a timeless image, and your selection of vantage point and composition is spot on. You are getting very good at using your superphone and doing all the adjustments as well. I like your selection of sepia tone preset. The PC is on vacation. |

Ian, what a great image. The only thing that may get close to the Steam Punk gathering would be Burning Man that takes place in Black Rock City, on the Desert in Nevada. It has been on my to do list, but it has not happened. It is not easy to get in.
This image of the dressed man and the van in the back blend perfectly together. It is sharp and I like the way his outfit almost forms part of all the gadgets on the van in continuity. You have a good eye to select your models and venues. |

Eric, being at the right place at the right time and having the right tools, is a jackpot. The fill flash really brought out the details of the birds contrasting with the dark background. There is almost complete separation among them. The image is sharp. |

Gary, Bocce can get very active and emotional but as you said it is mainly slow and boring. Here in this group of general photography, all the PP done is allowed, but it would not be allowed in the Photo Travel Division Image Discussion Groups, of which I happen to be the General Director as well as member of group 4 there. I like all the activity and body language going on. Now, the multiple exposure of the ball flying and the blurred player is very creative. |

Vella, interesting architectonic image of the church and the foreground works a a leading path towards the back that is well illuminated. I believe that the foreground is too dark and lack detail on the woodwork and that maybe the reason it has not done well. I worked on the original, and using the new masking brush in ACR added light to the wood, made the image more straight and converted it using Silver Efex 3 |

Ian, good timing. Run or get wet. Good action shot and freezing of the wave splash. Good B&W interpretation. I wonder if you had a little more real state in front of the young man so it does not create tension, or perhaps the crop was intentional ? |

Stephen, the Haitian population in DR have a much darker skin.
The Dominicans are mainly Mulatto, Mestizo, Or Multiracial (Mixed Ancestry). They make up about 72% of the entire population. They are the majority in the country. They are descendants from the racial integration between the Blacks and the Whites. They have a total population of over 8 million |

Dan, I just learned the meaning of the image's title, related to bikes and people. Interesting as how the arrangement of the back wheels of the parked bikes is broken by one that is out of line, and the one that really makes the image. It is sharp, and the B&W interpretation suits the seen. I also like as how the walkway leads us to the back where there is one person. I would have been great if you had submitted the color version as well (you can still do it) |

Bruce, patience pays off, and yes, I do think this image qualifies as a street scene. Indeed it is a complex convergence of the pedestrian walkways, and the presence of the human component, specially the person with the red umbrella, gives scale and life to an otherwise sterile image (good as lines/architecture, etc). The contrast between illuminated and shadowed areas also give Interest to the image. It is sharp. Now, as far as how much to crop, it is on the eyes beholder and depending on what do you want to emphasize. It looks like a couple of the walkways are descending to an underground area |

Gloria, interesting street scene in the Dominican Republic, given by the flag if you would not have mentioned it. It is unfortunate that the boy is walking and looking away from your vantage point, and the fact that his shoe shining business box is amputated, which happens to be the title of your image. The image is sharp, straight, and the colors consistent with a cloudy day (soft shadows). I just cropped it except the lower edge to remove some of the distracting items, and desaturated the red sign above his head (For Sale). Now the image reflects the mood of the moment, frustration, walking away into the street. |

Bill, this image is showing a snowed street and some people in the background and a couple sitting in the front, but looking away. They all are too dark to recognize what are they doing. The light pole is not straight. I tried to fix it with the auto function, but did not work, so I had to do it manually with the warp function in photoshop. Also added some light to the shadows and now we can see what is going on. Overall, an interesting street scene. |

Les, typical seeing of India which is considered as a third world country as well as a developing country. The nation has high rates of poverty, corruption, an out-of-date caste framework, child malnutrition, high levels of air pollution and gender inequality. Nevertheless, the Indian economy is considered one of the fastest-growing economies in the globe. Even so, it has not reached levels of protection to its citizens as you depict in this image of workers, with no evidence of protective outfit, helmet or appropriate tools. This image has all the elements for a photojournalistic section. |

Ronald, great action shot with lots of activity going on. The player with the ball trying to get through and the other falling down. I prefer the B&W interpretation, since the color one has a very strong magenta hue that happens when ISO reaches that level, plus the fact that both images are a little soft, probably secondary to noise reduction. The B&W version may improve adding some light to the dark areas/shadow. |

Bruce, great action shot with good separation of the players that look like they are engaged in a dance, with the middle player with all four in the air. Sharp and great bokeh (400 mm prime f/2.8). I just made the verticals and horizontal straight. |

Hans, great action shot, and it looks like Kain Rix is determined to protect the player with the ball. The two guys on the ground dressed in red are really struggling to stop them. In any sports event and if you are shooting at eye level like you did it is impossible to avoid the background people, but it is good that you were able to blur them with f/3.5. It is unfortunate that the player in blue his leg is partially amputated at the edge of the frame. Cropping him out I think it improves the image |

Gerald, the first thing that impacted me and before I read your description, was the perfect separation of the cyclist including the ones in the background. The image is sharp, and I do not think that the crop of the pole and photographer will help since it will create a strong tension due to the proximity and almost touching the frame of the first man in the peloton. great image. |

Mervyn, the Blue Jay you see around your house is not the Scrub Jay (read my note below) but the regular and abundant Blue Jay that has a feathers crown on his head, both the male and the female, and the only difference is the size. |

Brenda, the Scrub Jay is the state's only endemic bird, which means the Florida scrub-jay is found nowhere else, and its need for a specific habitat is one reason why scrub-jay numbers are declining. The only bird species that requires a sandy, scrubby habitat to survive is the Florida scrub-jay. Development has increased and the scrub-jays' choice habitat has become more limited. The species is federally listed as threatened, in large part due to of loss of habitat and decades of fire. I have only seen them once in Merritt Island near Titusville.
The image is sharp, and your PP brought out detail and color, and the crop makes him stand out.

I like as how the middle tree stands out against the bush and other tree, and the presence of the bird gives more life to the image. The clouds add drama and frame the tree. Marie, what a beautiful male duck, but it looks like he got spooked away by the other male defending his female. Image is sharp in spite of the crop. I would have left a little more space in the front to give him space to fly away. It seems as if he is walking on water. I added some light to the shadows and a little vibrance and now we can see better details and more color. |

Adrian, nice image of the hummingbird, with the head, neck and eye very sharp. To freeze the wing you need to use shutter speed in excess of 1/2500 to 1/3000 sec, but in this image gives the sense that is hovering in the air. Yes, the flower blocks part of the bird which will bring the score to a lower number, and probably not even an acceptance. The colors are very rich |

Randy, there is a love story on this image including sharing which is common practice in the couple. The position of the male cardinal and the female form an inverted V. I believe there is some oversaturation which distorts the real color of the female which is brownish, and there is excess blue in both. The image is sharp in spite of the crop. There is nothing you can do about the twig in the back of both |

Bruce, we all had to start somewhere on action nature photography. On this image the eye/head is very sharp, and the tip of the wings are blurred, expected with a shutter speed of 1/500. The angle of the bird, almost ready to bank is what makes this image |
