I just looked up light pillars (thanks to Jeremy's tip) and was amazed at what it takes for them to form: "caused by light reflecting off tiny, flat ice crystals suspended in freezing, calm, and humid air". To have those conditions all at once as far south as Texas would indeed be photo-worthy. |

That's exactly right! I kept trying to think how to describe that look, and there you've done it, Jennie. |

I like that you removed the distractions in the foreground; it gives more of a timeless appearance suitable to the subject of the pyramids. I wondered what it would look like with the sun centered between the pyramids, but then I realized that would make it a photo of a sunrise instead of having the pyramids be the focus of attention. |

I think Jennie said it perfectly! I'm glad you explained that it is a feature of ring light to produce very flat lighting. It perfectly matches the look of expectant surprise of the subject, as if she is open to whatever is next. |

I hadn't originally noticed that the original was in color, but I definitely agree it is better in black and white. I also really like the crop to lend weight to the presence of the man in the boat, which adds interest to the scene. |

I like the reference to the art of Wabi-Sabi. Seeing the beauty in spite of imperfection or the passage of time is so clearly illustrated in your photo. Well seen! |

I tried your suggestion to do it in B/W and I like it that way too.
What drew me to the scene on that cold January evening was the fact that the leaves (both on the walkway and on the lawn) were still autumn brown and matched the color of the door mat.
As is so often the case, the different presentations convey different stories, and both can be valid. That's why it's such fun to participate in a study group :) |

Wow - you put into words exactly what I felt when I saw this and just had to take the picture. It's like the old saying - a picture IS worth a thousand words :) |

Like Bollin, I thought about cropping, but in this case because the foreground shows the almost-once-in-a-lifetime snow on the ground in Texas, I think it works both ways. |
