Thank you so much for that comment. It's one of the things that I find compelling about this form of photographic communication. It might be nice to sell a photo now and then, but you never know whether the buyer has any idea what the subject really was, and even less about what made it important to make that very capture and to present it in just that way. And the added benefit of having a jury of your peers to tweak it until it really shines is truly a bonus. |

That's a great idea, Abe. I often get so involved with leaving enough information to "tell the whole story" that I don't go far enough to focus on the real point of the story. Thanks for seeing that. |

Ruth has said it all! The color of the light really makes the scene come alive. I looked back at your shutter speed and was surprised that it wasn't faster. But then again, I suppose because these are very large birds, their motion is not as rapid as say a hummingbird. You are lucky to have had a chance to witness this. In Wisconsin we see only a few at a time. |

I think the processing is fine. I would call it dramatic natural, and I think it is appropriate to the subject matter. Not knowing the locale, I am unsure what the far distance (past the mountains) is - my guesses are either sky, sand, or water. Being Death Valley I'm pretty sure it isn't water, and is probably sand. |

It's so unusual to catch one of these fellows resting. I like seeing it against the background of the grass, and especially the way the grass can be seen through the brown areas of the wings. |

That's what it needed. I tried in Photoshop, but short of replacing the sky (which I resist ever doing) I could not get there. I've never invested the time to learn other software, even when I have it right on my computer. I can really see the benefit of it. Thanks, it's a great improvement, especially since it also dealt with the reflection as well. |

Having just replied to your comment on my photo, I have to admit that there are indeed times when replacing a sky is the way to go. I like your version where the more graphic representation of the building matches the punch of the sky. On the other hand, I also like Beverly's more naturalistic version. I think it's all a matter of the intent of the maker. |
