At this point I just use the phone that came with the camera. Some time ago I took a class to learn more about using the cell phone, and tried a bunch of other camera apps, but they were mostly more trouble than they were worth. With the native camera, you just swipe and go. I don't even have a modern cell phone. I think sometimes there's a bit of luck involved, but I usually get what I'm looking for. In the last couple of years, the cell phone has been almost my only camera (getting too old for all that equipment). I haven't heard of a camera that comes with Lightroom. I'll have to look into that. But I'm not a fan of Lightroom - I use the edit in Photos on my Mac and if I want more I take the photo into Photoshop. Thanks for the tip about the Lightroom camera. |

First of all, I think you got a great representation of the subject. I especially like that you captured the transparency of the wings so clearly. I didn't think anything needed to be changed, but looking at Eric's work, I like the fact that the shadows are opened up, making it even more possible to see the ground through the wings, and other features. I might tone down the greens a little. |

I totally agree. I was reluctant to go that far in case that was part of the story you were trying to convey. But I really like it cropped to just the main subject. I was tempted to go even further in from the right, but I think leaving enough of the water ensures the viewer can tell the house in on the canal. |

I took it Photoshop and applied a curves layer to reduce the overall brightness. Then I used a brush on the mask to brush in some light on their faces. Then I adjusted the overall brightness, and cloned out the green patch by the ear. I think that helps. It's such a wonderful memory photo. |

I think I would crop from the right to keep the focus on the building. That would also minimize the impact of the dark cloud in the upper right corner. |

I like Eric's idea for a darker vignette. I think the white confuses my eye as to where I should be looking. I do like the flower, especially that the yellows are not overexposed even through there are sharp shadows from the petals. |

I definitely agree about the distracting leaves, and I will be sure to fix that before I use the photo again. I did a lot of balancing of the exposures of the flower and the bug until I had what pleased me best.
I think I was more interested in the delicate shadings in the flower than the bug, who was sort of a happy accident. I have a series of photos of this particular flower and I've enjoyed playing with the tones and shading so that the flower has the best possible three dimensional appearance. |
