Hi Lona,
Okay. So the "original" (the small photo) is the flower head in its early stage. It is made up of many spikes arranged in a ball. If you know the plant called Allium, this would be a tiny version, only it grows on a bush. After a time each individual spike opens into a bluish-purple floret. The main photo shows the stage where several florets have opened but the surrounding spikes have not yet fully developed. I wanted to capture both stages to show the magic of nature unfolding. The two photos were taken on the same day so they were not on the same part of the bush so the backgrounds are different. I hope some day to be there when one of the flowers is completely open but I might not get that chance until their next season since nature waits for no one. |

I definitely agree with you about Marla's improvements. By the way, these flowers have negligible stems, and are simply nestled in their leaves. |

I guess I don't really see much change from the developed flower in your "blended" version. My two versions were two separate flowers in two different stages, neither was a blend of anything, so maybe I'm not understanding what you meant. But I do like the way you treated the background and exposure and tidied up things. I've so little time for photography right now that I'm missing a lot of those fine points. |

The point of my exercise with the two versions was to show the flower as it opened from the bud phase (original) to the more developed phase. I'm glad you pointed out the spider web. I agree that is a great subject. Of course these flowers come an go within a few days, and they're a couple hours from my house, so going back isn't an option. But that really points out how much more we could see if we have time to really look at our subjects (not possible in this case: took it on the way to the car as we were leaving and we were already running late). I got what I wanted, but could have gotten so much more had I had the time. |

Without the explanation I would have thought you just set this up for this image. I'm not sure the black section at the bottom works for me, but without the original I don't know what else you could have done. And I would like just enough additional sharpness in the background to be better able to read the "Corvette" logo. It definitely is an interesting idea. |

I agree that a little more definition of shadows would be good. You might try just playing with reducing the exposure a bit. I also notice your daughter's left arm is quite a bit brighter than the overall and would be fairly simple to select it and reduce the brightness. |

I think you captured not only the look, but the spirit of Moana. You might try a very slight vignette to see how it looks. |

I wouldn't change a thing, though Marla's idea of a vignette might be okay if it would be very slight. |
